Forever - Damage (내겐 축복이었던 R&B 발라드의 황금기 90's)

 

90년대는 말 그대로 R&B와 Balld의 황금기 였다.

 

포스트 모더니즘의 대두와, 젊음의 특권이라 할 수 있었던 기존체제에 대한 저항정신으로 똘똘 뭉친 Rock의 시대정신이 희미해지고 있었고,

 

음원을 재생할 수 있는 기기의 소형화와 휴대성이 비약적으로 발전하면서, 십대 소년 소녀들도 자신의 방에서 자신만의 소형 Audio 기기를 가질 수 있게 되었던 환경은,

 

기존에 중년 남성중심의 음원 구매층이, 젊은 남성 중심에서, 다시 십대 소녀들로 주 구매층의 변화를 가져왔던 80년대를 거쳐, 음반 레이블들의 공략층도 강하고 폭발적이었던 Rock 중심에서 부드럽고 달콤한 Pop과 Ballad 쪽의 황금기를 가져오지 않았나 싶다.

 

물론 90년대는 7~80년대의 좌,우가 대립하던 냉전시기를 지난 후, 전세계적으로 낭만과, 꿈과, 자신들의 꿈과 취미에 온전히 몰두 할 수 있는 자유가 허락되었던 마지막 시기가 아니었나 싶은데, 이런 사회 분위기가 이런 음악적 장르의 황금기를 가져온 주요 원인이 아니었을까 싶다.

 

이들도 그 시기 단지 음악을 좋아하는 스쿨밴드였다고 한다.

Westlife를 프로듀싱 했던 스티브 맥에 의해 탄생한 아름다운 이 곡은 크리스마스 시즌에 발표되어서 여느 한국인들과 마찬가지로 내게 있어서도 겨울이 되면 떠오는 따스하고 간질간질한 발라드.

어디를 가도 쉽게 들을 수 있었고, 라디오에서도 주파수를 돌리다보면 들을 수 있었고, 말 그대로 귀에 딱지가 앉을 만큼 많이 들었던 그 곡...
