Every Rose Has Its Thorn - Poison.1988(이야기들)

"Every Rose Has Its Thorn"은 미국의 글램 메탈 밴드 Poison의 두 번째 앨범 <Open Up and Say... Ahh!>의 수록곡으로 보컬을 맡은 Bret Michaels이 주축이 되어 기타의 C.C. DeVille, 베이스의 Bobby Dall 드럼의 Rikki Rockett이 함께 만들었고, Tom Werman이 프로듀싱 하였다.

 

 

앨범의 세 번째 싱글로 발매되어 빌보드 HOT100에서 3주 연속으로 1위를 차지했으며, 캐나다 2위, 뉴질랜드와 아일랜드에서 8위를 기록한 것을 비롯하여 영국, 호주, 네덜란드, 스웨덴, 스위스, 유로 HOT100에서 TOP20에 들며 많은 사랑을 받았다.

 

많은 록 그룹의 명곡들이 그렇듯이 이 곡의 탄생 배경도 좀 안타까운데, VH1의 'Behind the Music'에서의 인터뷰에서 밴드의 보컬이자 이 곡의 창작자인 Bret Michaels는 이 노래의 영감이 달라스에 있는 빨래방에서 건조기 속의 옷이 마르기를 기다리며 공중전화로 여자친구에게 전화를 걸었던 그날밤의 상황에서 왔다고 한다.

Bret Michaels는 수화기 너머의 그녀의 목소리 뒤에서 왠 남자의 목소리를 들었고 크게 충격을 받았는데, 전화를 끊고는 빨래방에 앉아 미친듯이 이 곡을 써내려갔다고 한다. (그 여친은 스트리퍼였다고....)

 

Good-time songs are much harder to write than bad-time songs or ballads. The ones that break your heart are the ones that are — sadly enough — easiest to write.

1988~1989년 사이에 북미에서 그야말고 공전의 히트를 쳤는데, 이시기는 이미 로큰롤이 무대뒤로 사라지고 팝이 지배하던 시기라서 더욱 의미가 있기도 했다. 이 곡은 글램 메탈의 클래식이 되었고, 수많은 "최고의" 리스트에 빠짐없이 이름을 올리곤 한다.

 

이 곡은 2012년 톰 크루즈 주연의 영화 <Rock of Ages>에서 주연배우들의 열창으로 새롭게 커버되어 많은 사랑을 받기도 했다.

(마일리 사이러스가 커버한 버전은 수준이하라며 명곡을 망치지 말라며 많은 욕을 먹기도 했다..)
