"Un-Break My Heart"는 미국의 아티스트 Toni Braxton의 두 번째 정규 앨범 <Secrets>의 수록곡으로 Diane Warren이 만들고 David Foster가 프로듀싱하였다.

 

 

앨범의 두 번째 싱글로 발매되어 빌보드 HOT100에서 무려 11주 동안 1위를 차지했고, 영국, 캐나다, 오스트리아, 유로HOT100, 루마니아, 스웨덴, 스위스, 대만등에서 1위를 차지했으며, 호주, 벨기에, 체코, 덴마크, 핀란드, 프랑스, 독일, 헝가리, 아이슬란드, 아일랜드, 이탈리아, 네덜란드, 노르웨이, 스페인등에서 TOP10에 들며 전세계적으로 크게 사랑받았다.

 

 

북미에서만 300만장 이상이 판매되었고 월드와이드 세일즈로 1,000만장 이상 판매되어 역사상 가장 많이 팔린 싱글 중 하나가 되었는데, 상업적인 대성공과 더불어 1997년 제39회 GRAMMY AWARDS에서 Best Female Pop Vocal Performance(베스트 여성 팝 보컬 퍼포먼스)를 수상하며 수상의 영예까지 거머줠 수 있었다.

 

 

David Foster라는 팝의 마이더스의 손을 통해 탄생한 이 곡은 4분 25초의 Pop & R&B Power Balad로 가수가 떠나간 연인에게 그(그녀)가 야기한 고통을 되돌려 달라고 간청하는 "blistering heartbreak"(지독한 비탄)을 얘기하는데, 낮은 음역대를 가진 Toni Braxton의 contralto(콘트랄토) 보컬이 B minor(B단조)로 시작하여 후렴구에서 D minor(D단조)로 변조되고 브릿지에서 G♯ minor(G♯ 단조)로 줄타기를 하는 이 곡이 말하려는 슬픔과 그리움을 표현하는데 더없이 잘 맞아떨어지면서 세기의 명곡 중 하나로 남게 되었다.

Diane Warren이 완성된 곡을 Arista Records의 L. A. Reid(2000년에 사장이 되는)에게 들려줬을 때 그는 대만족했지만, 정작 Toni Braxton은 이 노래에 대한 dislike(거부감)을 완강하게 표시했다고 한다. 하지만 성공에 대한 촉이 대단했던 L. A. Reid는 Toni Braxton이 이 곡을 부르도록 끈질기게 설득 했고, 결국 이 곡은 그녀의 시그니쳐가 되었다.

 

곡의 녹음 세션이 끝난 후 Braxton은 Warren에게 와서 자신이 왜 이 곡에 대해 skeptical(회의적)이었는지를 설명했는데, didn't want another "heartbreak track"(또 다시 "비통함으로 가득한 노래"를 하기가 싫었)기 때문이라고 해명했다고 한다.

 

 

*Contralto(콘트랄토) :

여성 목소리 중 가장 낮은 음을 내는 여성 성악가 또는 그 낮은 목소리를 말하는 용어.

음역은 대략 1옥타브 파(F3) 에서 2옥타브 라(A4)까지를 말하는데, 개인의 성대 특성에 따라 1옥타브 레(D3) 까지 내려가기도 하고 3옥타브 도(C5)까지 올라가기도 한다. 즉 Tenor(테너)와 비슷하게 겹치는 음역대.

단 여자 중 가장 낮은 음역대는 알토라고 오해하기 쉬운데, 알토=음역, 콘트랄토=사람을 뜻하는 것으로, 현실세계에서 콘트랄토를 가진 여성 성억가나 가수가 극단적으로 드물기에 부족한 수를 메우기 위해 소프라노 음역의 성악가가 알토로 배정받는 경우가 많다.

콘트랄토 가수 자체가 극단적으로 드물고 콘트랄로가 주연인 경우는 거의 없기에, 주연이 될 가능성은 희박하지만, 조연으로의 수요는 넘쳐나기에 배역을 구걸해야하는 소프라노와는 달리 일거리가 줄을 서 있기에 일을 골라서 할 수 있을만큼 틈세시장에서 위너가 될 수 있다.
