"Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood"은 프랑스계 미국 그룹인 Santa Esmeralda의 데뷔앨범 <Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood>의 수록곡으로 Bennie Benjamin & Horace Ott & Sol Marcus가 만들었고, Nicolas Skorsky & Jean Manuel de Scarano가 프로듀싱 하였다.
앨범의 리드 싱글로 발매되어 빌보드 HOT100에서 15위까지 올랐고 빌보드 클럽 뮤직 차트에서 1위를 차지했으며, 캐나다, 호주, 프랑스, 뉴질랜드, 남아공등에서 TOP10에 들었고, 일부 국가들에서 차트 1위에 오르며 크게 성공하였다.
원래 이 곡은 1964년에 작곡가 Horace Ott(호레이스 오트)가 당시 자신의 애인이었고 나중에는 아내가 되는 Gloria Caldwell(글로리아 콜드웰)과 결별한 기간에 그녀가 본인에 대해 오해하고 있는 부분들에 대해 구구절절 해명한 글을 쓰다가 영감이 떠올라 작곡가 베니 벤자민, 솔 마커스와 함께 곡으로 완성해 버린것이 오리지널로, 미국의 싱어송라이터이자 피아니스트인 Nina Simone 가 처음으로 녹임했다. 하지만 아주 느린 템포의 블루스 스타일 이었던 오리지널 버전은 전혀 성공하지 못했고,
1965년 미국 밴드 The Animals가 오리지널 버전의 마지막 부분에 아주 잠깐 등장하는 멜로디를 곡 전체를 아우르는 메인 멜로디로 가져와서 빠른 템포의 Blues Rock 버전으로 편곡하여 완전히 다른 느낌으로 환골탈태시킨 버전이 크게 성공하게 된다.
"It was never considered pop material, but it somehow got passed on to us and we fell in love with it immediately."(이 곡은 팝 음악으로 만들 소재로 간주되지는 않았지만, 어떻게든 저희들의 품에 왔고 우리는 그 즉시 사랑에 빠졌죠.)

그 후 시간이 흘러 1977년에 그룹 Santa Esmeralda는 The Animals의 버전에 Disco(디스코) & Flamenco(플라멩코) & Latin rhythm(라틴 리듬)으로 변형시킨 디스코 버전을 발표하는데, 이 곡이 초대박을 치게된다. 이 버전은 처음에 무려 16분 12초짜리의 대곡으로 만들어져서 12인치 싱글 LP의 한 사이드를 꽉 채울 정도의 길이였고, 짧게 편집된 클럽용 버전이 대중적으로 널리 플레이 되었다.
그리고 시간이 흘러 잊혀졌던 이 곡은 2003년 Quentin Tarantino(쿠엔틴 타란티노)감독의 영화 <Kill Bill: Volume I>(킬빌)에서 클라이막스의 전투씬에 사용되면서 다시 대중들에게 인기를 얻었고, 수많은 드라마, 시트콤, 예능등의 매체들에서 사용되어 익숙해졌다.
우리나라의 경우 2008년 개봉된 영화 <좋은 놈, 나쁜 놈, 이상한 놈>에서 달파란 & 장영규가 연주곡으로 만든 버전이 메인 OST로 사용된 이후로 각종 예능프로등에서 사용되면서 하나의 특정 상황에 사용되는 멜로디 정도로 인식되면서 한국인들에게는 아주 익숙한 멜로디가 되었다.
