You Win Again - Bee Gees.1987(이야기들)

"You Win Again"은 Bee gees의 일곱번째 앨범 <E.S.P>의 수록곡으로 Bee gees의 3형제(Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb, Maurice Gibb)가 함께 만들었고, Arif Mardin, Brian Tench, Bee Gees가 함께 프로듀싱 하였다.

 

 

앨범의 첫 번째 싱글로 발매되어 빌보드 HOT100에서는 75위까지 올랐고, 영국, 독일, 유로HOT100, 오스트리아, 아일랜드, 노르웨이, 스위스등 다수의 유럽 국가들에서 1위를 차지했으며, 캐나다, 호주, 이탈리아, 네덜란드, 남아공, 스웨덴등에서 TOp10에 들며 광범위하게 사랑받았다.

 

이 곡으로 Bee Gees는 그들의 컴백을 알렸고, 8년 만에 처음으로 영국 싱글 차트 1위를 차지한 것을 포함하여 많은 유럽 국가에서 1위 히트곡이 되었으며, 영국에서 1960년대, 1970년대, 1980년대에 1위곡을 보유한 최초의 그룹이 되었다.

 

또한 이 곡으로 Bee gees의 3형제(Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb, Maurice Gibb)는 작곡가로서 1987년 British Academy의 Ivor Novello Award에서 Best Song Musicly and Lyrically를 수상하기도 했다.

 

 

큰 형 Barry Gibb은 멜로디를 썼고, 동생 Maurice Gibb은 그의 차고에서 드럼사운드를 구상했는데,

"We absolutely thought that 'You Win Again' was going to be a big hit. It took us a month to cut it and get the right mix."(우리는 'You Win Again'이 대히트 할 것이라 믿어 의심치 않았어요. 그 곡을 편집하고 믹스 하는데 한 달이 걸렸죠.)

Maurice Gibb는 2001년 5월 Mojo와의 인터뷰에서 이 곡에 대해 아래와 같이 소회를 밝히기도 했다.

"When we get together and write, it's not like three individuals ― it's like one person in the room. Usually, we have a book of titles and we just pick one. I loved 'You Win Again' as a title, but we had no idea how it might turn out as a song. It ended up as a big demo in my garage, and I recorded stomps and things. There was just one drum on there. The rest was just sounds. Then, everybody tried to talk us out of the stomps at the start. They didn't want it. 'Take it off. Too loud! Can we have them not on the intro, just when the music starts?' All this stuff, but as soon as you hear that 'jabba-doomba, jabba-doomba' on the radio, you know it's us. It's a signal. So, that's one little secret ― give people an automatic identification of who it is."

(우리가 곡을 쓸 때는 각각의 3명이 아니라 한 사람과도 같아요. 대체로 우리는 제목들이 적힌 노트(책)를 가지고 거기서 하나를 고르는 편이죠. 저는 'You Win Again'이 제목으로 마음에 들었는데, 우리는 그걸 어떻게 노래로 만들어야할 지 아이디어가 없었죠. 결국 제 차고에서 데모를 녹음했는데, 저는 발을 구르고 여러가지 효과음을 녹음했죠. 거기엔 드럼이 하나밖에 없었고 나머지는 효과음이었죠. 그걸 듣고나서는 모두가 도입부의 Stomp에 대해 말해왔어요. '뺍시다.너무 시끄러워요! 인트로에서 Stomp를 빼고 그냥 음악이 나오게 하는게 좋지 않을까요'라며 원치 않아 했죠. 이 모든 것들에도 불구하고 라디오에서 '두구두-타 두구두-타'하는 타악음을 듣는 순간 우리라는 걸 알 수 있죠. 그렇기에 그것은 사람들에게 그 곡이 누구인지 자동적으로 인식하게 해주는 하나의 작은 비밀이예요.)
