Out of Touch - Hall & Oates.1984(이야기들)

"Out of Touch"는 미국의 블루 아이드 소울 듀오인 Hall & Oates의 열두 번째 정규 앨범 <Big Bam Boom>의 수록곡으로 듀오인 Daryl Hall과 John Oates가 만들었고, Hall & Oates와 함께 Bob Clearmountain가 프로듀싱 하였다.

 

 

앨범의 리드 싱글로 발매되어 빌보드 핫 100 1위를 차지했고, 영국 인디차트, 아일랜드, 루마니아등에서 1위를 기록했으며, 핀란드, 네덜란드, 노르웨이, 스코틀랜드등에서 top10에 들며 크게 사랑받았다.

 

 

이 곡은 80년대의 분위기가 물씬 느껴지는 신디사이저와 묵직한 드럼의 타격감이 도입부에서 귀를 사로잡는데,

John Oates에 따르면 그는 사용법을 모르는 신디사이저를 무작위로 가지고 놀면서 후렴구를 생각해 냈다고 한다. 또한 그는 원래 이 곡은 Philly sound(필리사운드 : 필라델피아에서 시작된 소울 뮤직)를 가졌기에 Stylistics에게 잘 어울리는 노래가 될 수 있다고 생각했다고 한다. 하지만 다음날 스튜디오에서 만난 공동 프로듀서는 그에게 그 곡이 Hall & Oates 에게 너무 잘 어울리기에 그들 자체의 히트작이 되어야 한다고 제안했고, 이에 Daryl Hall과 John Oates은 함께 이 곡을 다듬에 완성시키고 히트하게 된다.

일반적으로 Hall & Oates로 알려져 있으나 공식명은 Daryl Hall and John Oates인 이들은, 항상 자신들이 듀오로 불리는 것보다는 독립적인 두 아티스트의 협업으로 인식되기를 원했던 뮤지션인데,

 

 

70~80년대 중반까지 북미와 유럽에서 엄청나게 성공을 거뒀던 그들은 이 곡을 포함하여 6곡의 빌보드 HOT100 1위곡을 보유하고 있고, 13곡의 TOP10 히트곡과 29곡의 TOP40 히트곡을 보유한 대기록을 가지고 있는 이들은 당시 마이클 잭슨, 마돈나, 스티비원더, 엘튼 존에 견줄만큼 대단한 커리어를 이어오던 장수 뮤지션이었다.

 

 

그럼에도 불구하고 의외로 한국에서는 인지도가 많이 떨어지는데, 이는 아마도 80년대 다른 New Wave(뉴웨이브) 신스팝 계열의 스타들에 비해 '블루 아이드 소울'이라는 당시로써는 좀 생소한 느낌의 장르가 그 이유였지 않을까 추측해 본다. (80년대까지만 해도 선정성, 이념성, 기타등등으로 애매한 잣대를 내세워 마구잡이로 금지곡을 지정하던 당시 대한민국의 매서웠던 검열의 칼날역시 크게 작용했을 것이다.)
