"I'm Not the Only One"은 영국의 싱어송라이터인 Sam Smith의 데뷔 앨범 <In the Lonely Hour>의 수록곡으로 Sam Smith 와 Jimmy Napes(본명:James Napier) 가 함께 만들고 Jimmy Napes(본명:James Napier) 와 Steve Fitzmaurice가 함께 프로듀싱 하였다.

 

 

빌보드 HOT100에서 5위까지 올랐고, 캐나다 Adult Contemporary, 남아공에서 1위를 차지했으며, 영국 3위를 비롯하여 벨기에, 체코, 덴마크, 유로HOT100, 헝가리, 아이슬란드, 아일랜드, 이탈리아, 멕시코, 네덜란드, 뉴질랜드, 폴란드, 포르투칼을 비롯하여 수많은 국가에서 TOP10에 들며 많은 사랑을 받았다.

 

 

2015년 제 57회 GRAMMY AWARD에서 Record of the Year(올해의 레코드), Song of the Year(올해의 노래), Album of the Year(올해의 앨범), Best Pop Vocal Album(베스트 팝 보컬 앨범) 4개 부문에서 상을 수상하며 데뷔앨범으로 대단한 영예를 가질 수 있었다. 참고로 Grammy Award에서 한해에 4개부문을 수상한 기록은 Christopher Cross(크리스토퍼 크로스), Billie Eilish(빌리 아일리시)에 이은 3번째 였다.

 

 

 

Orchestral strings(오케스트라 현)과 Gospel structure(가스펠 구조)로 탄탄하게 구성된 Piano soul ballad(피아노 소울 발라드)인 이 곡은 "infidelity in a relationship"(관계의 부정)을 주제로 다루며, 감성적인 보컬과 악기 편성등에 대해 평단으로부터 광범위한 평론가들의 호평을 이끌어 냈다.

 

재미있는 것은 대중의 사랑과 평단의 호평을 받았던 이 곡의 보컬은 "hungover vocals"(숙취보컬)로 잘 알려져 있는데, 그들이 전날마신 술이 깨지 않은 상태에서 이 곡의 녹음을 진행하여 오묘한 느낌의 보컬이 완성된 것으로 유명하다.

 

 

Sam Smith는 Digital Spy와의 인터뷰에서 "Napes played the chords one day and I was obsessed with them. We wrote a completely different song on top of those chords and it wasn't very good, so we scrapped it. Then two weeks later, I just loved the chords so we returned to them, and then we wrote 'I'm Not The Only One' in like an hour."(어느날 Jimmy Napes가 코드를 연주했는데 저는 그 코드에 엄청 집착했었어요. 우리는 그 코드 위에 완전히 다른 노래를 썼는데 그다지 좋지 않아서 폐기했었죠. 그리고 2주 후, 저는 원래의 그 코드가 너무 좋아서 다시 그 코드로 돌아와서 한 시간 만에 'I'm Not The Only One'을 썼어요.)

 

 

이 곡의 가사는 'infidelity and betrayal in a relationship, where someone decides to stay with a partner they know was cheating on them'(누군가가 자신을 속이고 있다는 것을 알고있는 파트너와 함께 있기로 결정하는 관계의 불륜과 배신)에 대해 이야기하는데, Sam Smith는 'the song was the only one on the album that is not about their life, but a marriage they observed first-hand, where they put themselves into the woman's shoes'(노래가 앨범에서 그들의 삶에 관한 것이 아니라 그들이 직접 관찰한 결혼 생활에 대한 유일한 노래)라고 밝히기도 했다.
