"You're Beautiful"은 영국의 싱어송라이터 James Blunt의 데뷔 앨범인 <Back to Bedlam>의 수록곡으로 James Blunt & Sacha Skarbek & Amanda Ghost가 함께 만들었고, Tom Rothrock이 프로듀싱 하였다.

 

 

앨범의 세 번째 싱글로 발매되어 빌보드 HOT 100에서 1위를 차지했고, 영국, 캐나다, 체코, 아일랜드, 네덜란드, 이탈리아, 노르웨이, 스웨덴, 벨기에, 헝가리등에서 차트 1위를 차지했으며, 호주, 뉴질랜드, 독일, 프랑스, 오스트리아등 수많은 국가에서 TOP 5에 들며 전세계적으로 크게 성공 하였고, 2007년 GRAMMY AWARD에서 Record of the Year(올해의 레코드), Song of the Year(올해의 노래), Best Male Pop Vocal Performance(베스트 남성 팝 보컬 퍼포먼스) 등 3개 부문에 노미네이트되기도 했다.

 

 

이 곡의 베경에 대해 일간지 Varsity는 James Blunt의 전 여자친구인 Dixie Chassay(해리포터 영화 시리즈의 캐스팅 아시스턴트로 알려진 인물)에 관한 것이라고 주장 했지만 Blunt는 이에 대해 확인하거나 부인하지 않았었다.

 

하지만 2006년 3월 8일 Oprah Winfrey Show(오프라 윈프리 쇼)에 출연한 James Blunt는 이 곡의 배경이 된 일화를 소개하며 신문에 보도된 내용을 긍정하는 뉘앙스 얘기했다.

 

"It's kind of miserable. It was about seeing my ex-girlfriend on the Underground in London with her new man, who I didn't know existed. She and I caught eyes and lived a lifetime in that moment, but didn't do anything about it and haven't seen each other since."(일종의 비참함이었어요. 저의 전 여자친구가 런던 지하철에서 저는 존재하는지도 몰랐던 그녀의 새 남자와 함께 있는 것을 보는 것이었죠. 그녀와 저는 눈이 마주쳤고 그 짧은 순간이 일생을 사는 것처럼 길게 느껴졌죠. 하지만 아무것도 하지 않았고 그 이후로는 서로를 본 적이 없었어요.)

 

James Blunt는 전 여친을 마주치고 난 후 집으로 돌아와서 2분 만에 가사를 써내려갔고, 나중에 미국 LA로 날아와 Sacha Skarbek과 함께 노래를 완성했다 (Amanda Ghost도 공동 작곡가로 인정되었다.)

 

 

시간이 많이 흐른 후 James Blunt는 영국의 The Guardian과의 인터뷰에서 아래와 같이 곡의 의미에 대해 밝혔다.

"It's always been portrayed as romantic, but it’s actually a bit creepy. It’s about a guy (me) who’s high and stalking someone else’s girlfriend on the subway. And then the stalker kills himself."(이 곡이 항상 낭만적인 것으로 묘사되었지만 실제로는 약간 오싹합니다. 이 노래는 마약에 취한 사람이 지하철에서 다른 사람의 여자 친구를 스토킹하는 남자(나)에 관한 것이예요. 그리고는 스토커가 스스로 목숨을 끊죠.)

 

 

* 2절 가사의 Fuckin High 라는 구절은 '내가 그녀에게 완전히 빠져 있었다는 걸' 같은 식으로 오역되었었는데, 사실은 "내가 ㅆㅂ 완전 약에 쩔어 있었다는걸"로 번역해야 맞다. 뮤직비디오에서는 이 욕설이 문제가 될 것으로 예상했는지, Flying high로 가사가 변경되었다.
