"True Colors"는 미국의 싱어송 라이터인 Cyndi Lauper의 두 번째 앨범 <True Colors>의 수록곡으로 Billy Steinberg와 Tom Kelly가 만들었고, Cyndi Lauper 와 Lennie Petze가 프로듀싱하였다.

 

빌보드 HOT100 에서 1위를 차지했고, 캐나다 차트에서 1위를 차지했으며, 호주, 뉴질랜드, 벨기에, 아앨랜드, 이스라엘, 네덜란드, 노르웨이등에서 HOT10에 들며 전세계적으로 큰 사랑을 받았는데, 월드와이드 세일즈로 700백만장이 넘는 판매고를 올리며 대 성공을 거두고, Grammy Award 에서 Best Female Pop Vocal Performance(최우수 여성 팝 보컬 퍼포먼스) 부문에 노미네이트 되기도 했다.

 

 

이 곡은 앨번에서 유일하게 Cyndi Lauper가 작곡에 참여하지 않은 곡인데, 작곡가인 Billy Steinberg는 원래 자신의 어머니에 대한 이야기로"True Colors"를 썼다고 한다. Billy Steinberg와 Tom Kelly는 최초에 이 곡을 Anne Murray에게 전달했었는데 마음에 들지 않았는지 Cyndi Lauper에게 넘겼고 전세계적인 히트곡이 되었다.

 

 

사실 이 앨범은 영국의 가수 마돈나의 <True Blue>와 동시기에 발매되어 계속 라이벌 구도로 비교가 되었는데, 마돈나의 앨범이 무려 2,000만장이 넘는 역사적 세일즈기록을 세우면서 상대적으로 Cyndi Lauper가 작아보이는 효과를 가져오기도 했다. 실제로 Cyndi Lauper와 Madonna는 주도적인 여성상을 제시하는 여성 아티스트라는 점을 제외하면 음악적으로 공통분모가 거의 없는 상당히 다른 스탠스를 가지고 있었음에도 불구하고 라이벌 구도를 만들기 좋아하는 언론에 의해 오늘날까지도 "Madonna's former rival"(마돈나의 과거 라이벌)로 인식되는 부분이 있어 안타깝기도 하다.

 

 

또한 자신을 사랑하라는 메세지를 담은 "True Colors"는 게이 커뮤니티의 대표곡이 되었다. 다양한 인터뷰에서 Cyndi Lauper는 친구였던 Gregory Natal의 사망( HIV/AIDS(에이즈)에 의한)이 자기자신에게 이 곡이 큰 반향을 일으켰다고 밝히기도 했다. 몇 년 후, Cyndi Lauper는 LGBT 노숙자 근절을 전담하는 비영리 단체인 True Colors Fund를 공동 설립했습니다.
