Mrs. Robinson - Simon & Garfunkel.1968(이야기들)

"Mrs. Robinson"은 미국의 듀오 Simon & Garfunkel의 네 번째 스튜디오 앨범 <Bookends>의 수록곡으로 Paul Simon이 만들고, Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel & Roy Halee이 함께 프로듀싱 하였다.

 

 

1967년 영화 <The Graduate>의 OST로 유명세를 떨친 이 곡은 이듬해인 1968년 싱글로 발매되어 크게 인기를 끌면서 빌보드 HOT100에서 3주간 1위를 차지하였고, 캐나다 차트 1위와 UK차트 4위를 비롯하여 호주, 벨기에, 네덜란드, 뉴랜드, 노르웨이, 스위스등에서 TOP10에 들며 전세계적으로 큰 사랑을 받으면서 이들의 두 번째 차트 1위곡이 된다.

 

 

또한 1969년 11회 Grammy Award에서 Record of the Year(올해의 레코드)와 Best Contemporary-Pop Performance – Vocal Duo(베스트 팝 보컬 퍼포먼스) 2개 부문을 수상하였는데, Rock음악으로는 처음으로 Record of the Year(올해의 레코드)를 수상한 곡으로 역사에 남게 되었다.

 

 

그리고 2004년 (AFI: American Film Institute미국영화연구소)에서 선정한 AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs(영화사 100년의 100대 삽입곡)에서 6위에 선정되기도 했다.

 

 

애초에 영화의 OST로 만들어졌던 이 곡의 가사를 보면 Dustin Hoffman(더스틴 호프만)이 분한 주인공인 Benjamin Braddock(벤자민 브래드독)을 유혹하는 Anne Bancroft(앤 벤크로프트)가 분한 Mrs. Robinson(미세스 로빈슨)은 "Jesus"에게 용서를 구해야 한다는 비아냥 대는 내용으로 되어 있다.

 

 

영화속에서 Benjamin Braddock(벤자민 브래드독)을 유혹하여 육체관계까지 맺은 Mrs. Robinson은 당연히 유부녀일 뿐 아니라 Katharine Ross(케서린 로스)가 분한 그녀의 딸인 Elaine Robinson(엘레인 로빈슨)이 벤자민과 같은 나이인데, 자신의 딸과 벤자민이 눈이 맞는다...

 

 

 

또한 가사에서는 쌩뚱맞게 MLB의 야구 스타 "Joe DiMaggio"가 언급되는데,

"Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio"

그는 이미 야구를 은퇴한지 10년도 훌쩍 넘었고, Marilyn Monroe(마를린 먼로)와의 결혼이 파탄난지도 오래된 후였던 퇴물 취급을 받고 있었는데, 이 곡에서 이름이 언급되면서 뜬금없이 화제의 중심에 섰고, 본인은 그것을 탐탁치 않아 했다고는 하지만, 그로 인해서 다시금 여러가지 광고를 찍게되는 등 일면식도 없던 Simon & Garfunkel 덕분에 광고촬영으로 경제적 수입을 얻게되는 결과를 가졌다.

 

이 곡은 말 그대로 공전의 히트를 기록하면서 그들의 대선배였던 Frank Sinatra가 이 곡을 커버하기도 했는데, 그 외에도 Lemonheads, Bon Jovi를 비롯한 여러 아티스트들이 커버하며 오랜 생명력을 이어오고 있다.
