"Say You, Say Me"는 미국의 싱어송라이터인 Lionel Richie가 1985년 영화 <White Nights>(한국 개봉명 : 백야)를 위해 만든곡으로 싱글로 발매되었고, 영화개봉 이듬해에 3번 째 정규 앨범인 <Dancing on the Ceiling>에 수록된 곡으로 Lionel Richie 본인이 작사&작곡하였고, Lionel Richie & James Anthony Carmichael이 함께 프로듀싱 하였다.

 

 

싱글로 발매되어 빌보드 HOT100과 Adult Contemporary차트 및 Hot R&B차트에서 1위를 차지하였고, 캐나다, 네덜란드를 포함한 5여개국에서 차트 1위를 차지하였으며, 영국 호주를 비롯한 다수의 국가에서 TOP 5에 들며 크게 성공하였다.

 

상업적인 성공과 더불어 58회 Oscar Award(아카데미 시상식)와 GoldenGlobe Award(골든 글로브)에서 Best Original Song(최우수 주제가상)을 수상하는등 수상의 영예도 가질 수 있었다.

 

Lionel Richie라는 이름을 들으면 가장 먼저 떠오를 정도로 그를 대표하는 곡중에 하나인데, 특이하게도 이 곡은 그다지 유명하지 않은 영화를 위해 만들어진 곡이었다.

 

이전에는 다뤄진 적이 없었던 '발레리노'들의 이야기라는 독특한 주제를 가지고 Mikhail Baryshnikov와 Gregory Hines가 주연을 맡은 영화 <White Nights>의 메가폰을 잡게된 Taylor Hackford 감독은 Lionel Richie에게 영화의 메인 테마곡을 제작해줄것을 요청했고, Lionel Richie는 발라드 곡인 "Say You, Say Me"의 데모를 제시했다. 감독은 이 곡을 너무 마음에 들어해서 바로 채택이 되었고, 스튜디오가 아닌 Lionel Richie의 거실에서 곡 녹음이 진행되었다고 한다.

 

Lionel Richie가 소속된 레이블 이었던 <Motown Record>는 Lionel Richie의 1983년 앨범 <Can't Slow Down>의 대성공에 이은 첫 싱글이 다른 레이블을 통해 발매되는 것을 원치 않았기 때문에 이 곡은 영화의 OST 앨범에 수록되지 못하고 싱글로 발매되었으며, 영화개봉 이듬해인 1986년 발매된 정규 3번 째 앨범인 <Dancing on the Ceiling>에 수록되는 이유가 되었다.
