"Turn Beat Around"는 쿠바계 미국인 가수이자 작곡가인 Gloria Estefan이 영화 <The Specialist>의 사운드트랙으로 녹음한 곡으로, Gerald Jackson and Peter Jackson이 작곡하고 Emilio Estefan Jr. 와 Lawrence Derme이 프로듀싱 하였는데, 그녀의 네 번째 앨범 <Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me>에도 수록되었다.

 

 

이 곡은 싱글로 발매되어 빌보드 HOT Dance Club Play 차트에서 1위를 차지하였고, 빌보드 HOT 100에서 13위에 올랐으며, 호주 8위, 뉴질랜드18위, 영국차트에서 21위를 기록하는등 유럽의 여러 국가에서도 차트 상위권에 위치하며 성공하였더.

 

정작 실버스타 스텔론과 샤론 스톤의 만남으로 크게 화제가 되었던 영화 <The Specialist>는 흥행에서 기대에 못미치는 성적으로 실패를 하였지만, 메인 주제곡이었던 이 라틴 댄스곡이 크게 히트하면서 그녀는 명실상부한 라틴음악의 여왕이라는 칭호를 재차 확인시키며 라틴음악이 메인스트림으로 올라오는 계기가 되기도 했다.

 

 

Gloria Estefan은 쿠바 출신인데, Harvana에서 태어났지만 피델 카스트로의 사회주의 독재통치를 피하기 위해 그녀가 3세 때 온 가족이 미국 플로리다 주 마이애미로 이주하였다고 한다. 미국에서 라틴 팝 가수로서 명성을 떨쳤는데, 미국에 라틴 팝 시장을 개척하여 메인스트림으로 끌어올리며 세계인들이 두루 즐길 수 있도록 대중화를 시킨 점을 큰 업적으로 평가된다. 라틴 음악의 여왕으로 칭해지는 그녀 이후로 샤키라, 리키 마틴, 엔리케 이글리시아스등 전세계적으로 유명한 기라성같은 라틴 팝 가수들이 미국 시장을 공략해서 성공적으로 빌보드 차트에 오르기도 했다.

 

 

그녀는 누적집계 7,500만장이라는 경이로운 앨범 판매량을 기록하여 역사상 가장 성공한 여성 아티스트중 한명이 되었고, Grammy Award에서 무려 7번이나 수상했을뿐 아니라 미국 대통령으로부터 Presidential Medal of Freedom(대통령 자유 훈장)을 수상하기도 했던 말 그대로 라틴 음악의 여왕이자 라티노의 상징적인 인물이 되었다.

 

오리지널 곡은 Gerald Jackson and Peter Jackson이 작곡하고 Warren Schatz가 프로듀싱 하여, 미국의 여배우이자 가수인 Vicki Sue Robinson이 1976년에 그녀의 데뷔 앨범인 <Never Gonna Let You Go>에 수록하였었다. 싱글로 발매되었던 Vicki Sue Robinson의 오리지널 버전은 빌보드 Disco 차트에서 4주간이나 1위를 차지했었으며, 빌보드 팝 차트 10위, 빌보드 소울 차트 73위를 기록했으며, Grammy Award에서 Best Female Pop Vocal Performance부문에 노미네이트 되기도 했다.
