"Physical"은 영국계 호주 가수인 Olivia Newton-John의 정규 11번째 앨범 <Physical>에 수록된 곡으로, 앨범의 리드 싱글로 발매되었다. 이 곡은 Steve Kipner와 Terry Shaddick이 작곡했고, John Farrar가 프로듀싱 했으며 원래는 로드 스튜어트에게 갈 예정이었던 곡이라고 주인을 찾지 못했고, Tina Turner에게도 제안했었지만 거절하면서 Olivia Newton-John에게 가게 되었다.

 

 

 

역시 노래는 주인이 따로 있단는 말이 맞는 것인지, "Physical"은 미국에서 발매되자마자 200만장이 넘게 판매되며 대히트를 기록했으며, 미국 음반 산업 협회(RIAA)에서 플래티넘 인증을 받았다. 빌보드 HOT 100에서 무려 10주 동안이나 No.1을 차지했고 Olivia Newton-John의 커리어에서 가장 큰 히트곡이 되었으며, 이 곡 이전까지 너무나 반듯하고 깔끔한 이미지에 갇혀 있었던 그녀가 Dirty & Sexy & Funky한 Pop의 슈퍼스타로서의 그녀의 유산을 공고히 하는데 일조했다. (당시 가사의 선정성을 이유로 금지된 국가들도 있었다.)

 

 

 

"Physical"(원래 제목은 "Let's Get Physical" 이었던)은 처음에는 Rod Stewart와 같은 "마초 & 남성 & 록"을 생각하고 있었던 곡인데, Olivia Newton-John의 당시 매니저였던 Lee Kramer가 '실수'로 이 곡의 데모를 들었을 때 그는 즉시 그녀에게 노래를 보냈지만 처음에는 "너무 건방진"(Too Cheeky) 노래였기 때문에 그녀는 탐탁치 않아했다고 한다.

 

 

사족으로 이 노래의 기타 솔로는 미국 록 밴드 Toto의 창립 멤버인 Steve Lukather가 연주했다.

 

이 곡은 빌보드에서 선정한 "All Time Top 100" 에서 6위, "Top 50 Sexiest Songs of All Time" 에서 1위, "Top 100 Songs of the 1980s" 에서 1위를 차지했다.
