Queen의 1975년 앨범 <A Night At The Opera>에 수록된 곡으로, Freddie Mercury가 만들었다. 앨범이 발표된 같은 해에 싱글로 발매되어 영국, 캐나다, 뉴질랜드에서 No.1을 기록했고, 미국에서는 빌보드 9위를 기록하면 그들의 첫 TOP 10 진입곡이 된다. (이후 1992년 영화 <Wayne's World>에 OST로 사용된 후 Billboard Hot 100에서 2위까지 오르는 등 두번째 히트를 기록한다.)

 

2004년 GRAMMY 명예의 전당에 헌액되었고, Rolling Stones 선정 역사상 가장 위대한 곡 500에서 17위에 꼽혔으며, 2018년 12월기준으로 20세기 이후 가장 많이 스트리밍된 노래가 되었으며, 무려 16억회 이상 다운로드 & 스트리밍되었다.

 

 

이 곡은 무려 6분에 달하는 일종의 Suite로, 인트로, 발라드 부분, 오페라 악절, 하드 록 파트와 같은 크게 4부작으로 구성되어 있으며, 후렴이 없는 것으로 유명하다.

 

곡이 발표된 후 초반에는 비판적인 반응이 엇갈렸지만 시간이 지나며 "Bohemian Rhapsody"는 Queen을 상징하는 가장 인기 있는 노래가 되었으며, 또한 역사상 가장 위대한 록 노래 중 하나가 되었다.

 

싱글에는 획기적인 프로모션 뮤직비디오가 같이 나오면서 더욱 많은 인기를 끌었는데, 그 이유가 참 아이러니 하면서도 재미있다.

 

Queen은 당시 영국의 최고 인기 TV Show인 <Top Of The Pops>에 출연해야 했는데, 이 곡의 특성상 현장에서 라이브로 연주하는것 자체가 불가능 했고, 그렇다고 립싱크로 뻐끔거리는건 죽기보다 싫어했던 그들은 그럴바에야 차라리 뮤직 비디오를 만들어 방영하자는 아이디어를 내면서 이 획기적인 뮤직 비디오가 탄생하게 된다.

 

Rolling Stone은 이렇게 평하기도 했다.

"Cannot be overstated, practically inventing the music video seven years before MTV went on the air."(MTV보다 무려 7년이나 앞서서, 사실상 뮤직 비디오를 발명했다고 봐도 무방한 만큼 그 영향력은 아무리 강조해도 지나치지 않다)

 

Guardian지는 이렇게 평했다.

"Its music video one of the 50 key events in rock music history, helping make videos a critical tool in music marketing"
