"After All"은 1989년 2월 Geffen Records에서 발매된 Peter Cetera와 Cher가 듀엣으로 부른 히트곡으로 빌보드 HOT 100 6위, UK차트 6위등 많은 사랑을 받았다. 또한 이 곡은 빌보드 Adult Contemporary 차트에서 Cher에게 첫 솔로 1위를 안겨준 곡이 되었다.

 

 

영화 <Chances Are(천사의 선택)>의 메인 테마곡으로 사용되었으며 1989년 62회 아카데미 시상식에서 Best Original Song 후보로 노미네이트 됬지만, 아깝게도 아이들의 사랑을 독차지 했었던 인어공주의 OST "Under the Sea"에 밀려 고배를 마셨다.

 

 

 

이 노래는 Peter Cetera의 1997년 앨범 <You're The Inspiration – A Collection>에 수록되어 있으며, Cher의 19번째 앨범 <Heart of Stone>에도 수록되어 있다. Tom Snow가 작곡, Dean Pitchford가 작사, Peter Asher가 프로듀싱한 이 곡은 특이하게도 듀엣으로 곡을 부른 Peter Cetera와 Cher가 단 한번도 만난적이 없다는 것이다. 둘은 각자 따로 녹음을 했고, 단 한번도 같이 공연을 해본적이 없으며, 심지어는 뮤직비디오 조차 만들지 않았었다. 워낙에 바뻤기에 도저히 스케줄 조율이 불가능 했을 것이라고 하는데, 그래도 뭔가 다른 이유가 있지 않았을까 하는 생각이 든다.

 

후에 Sher는 솔로 버전을 다시 제작해서 불렀고, Peter Cetera는 다른 여성 보컬을 기용하여 이 곡을 불렀다.

 

 

 

솜털이 보송보송한 Robert Downey Jr.의 멋진 얼굴을 볼 수 있는 이 영화의 내용 처럼, 가사는 뭔가 어긋나면서도 계속 마주치게 되는 관계를 그리고 있는데, 다가서면 멀어지고 멀어진듯 하면 다시 만나게 되는 묘한 인연을 그리고 있기에 가슴 아픈 이별과 그리움 그에 상반되는 새로운 사랑의 감정의 엇갈리고 반복되는 우리네들의 감정의 굽이치는 물결을 표현해 냈기에 많은 사랑을 받지 않았을까.
