George Michael의 대표곡 중 하나이자 1980년대를 대표하는 곡 중 하나로, George Michael과 Andrew Ridgeley의 듀오 "Wham!"의 두 번째 앨범인 <Make It Big>에 수록되었으며 85년 2월 빌보드 싱글차트에서 3주간 연속 1위를 차지하였고 빌보드 연말차트 1위에 선정되기도 했으며, 25개국의 차트에서 1위를 차지할 정도로 어마어마한 사랑을 받았던 곡이다.

 

 

이 곡은 최초 녹음 당시에는 Jerry Wexler가 프로듀싱을 담당했지만, 완성된 곡은 George Michael의 마음에 들지 않았기에 본인이 직접 프로듀싱하여 재 녹음하였으며, George Michael의 재녹음 버전이 싱글 및 앨범에 수록되었기에이 곡은 크게 4가지 버전이 존재한다.

뮤직 비디오 역시 처음에는 Jerry Wexler 버전을 베이스로 제작되었으나 추후에 조지 마이클이 프로듀싱한 싱글 에디트 버전으로 대체되었으며, 영상도 편집되었다.

 

이 곡은 끈적한 느낌의 색소폰 리프가 아주 강렬하게 두드러지는데, 이 곡의 전세계적인 메가 히트 이후로, 처음에는 진지한 느낌의 BGM으로 사용되곤 했는데, 언제부턴가 세계각국의 방송&코미디에서 끈적한 상황을 희화화할 때 BGM으로 깔리면서 일명 '마성의 BGM'으로 통하게 되면서 이 곡은 몰라도 이 곡의 색소폰 리프는 아는 세대가 생겨나기도 했다.

 

 

 

굉장히 아이러니 한것은, WHAM!에서 백보컬 흉내를 내거나 옆에서 기타 연주를 하는 것이 전부인 얼굴 마담이었던 Andrew Ridgeley가 유일하게 작곡에 참여한 이 곡 Careless Whisper는 George Michael의 단독 싱글로 발매되었다는 것이다.
