Wham!이 1984년 double A-side 앨범으로 발매한 <Everything She Wants>의 첫번째 싱글 곡으로, SynthPop 스타일의 이 곡은 George Michael이 작곡하고 부르고, 프로듀싱까지 혼자서 맏아 했던 곡으로, 발매당시 UK차트 2위를 기록하는등 많은 사랑을 받았고, 시간이 지날수록 점점 더 그 값어치가 높아지며 후대에 와서 명곡 중의 명곡으로 추대되었다.

 

 

80년대에 학창시절을 보냈거나 그 위의 세대들은 이 곡이 당시 전세계의 음악 챠트를 석권했을것이라고 예상할 수 있지만, 의외로 이 Last Christmas는 오로지 영국에서만 발매가 되었고, 미국에서 발매조차 되지 않았기에 빌보드 차트에는 등장하지도 못했었다.

 

 

이 <Last Christmas>는 1984년 10월에 발매된 WHAM!의 정규 2집 앨범 <Make It Big>에 수록되지 않았었고, 단 두 달이 지난 12월 15일에 싱글로 별도 발매가 되었는데, 당시 전세계를 석권한 <Make It Big>앨범에 대한 일종의 팬서비스 차원에서 당시 유행하던 크리스마스송 레코드를 급조하여 발매하는 모양세였기에, 싱글 자켓도 유머러스하게 제작되었었다.

 

 

 

재미있는 사실은 이 Last Christmas가 명실상부한 Wham!의 최대 히트곡이 되었다는 것인데,

1984년 겨울에 유행하고 지나갈 것이라고 생각했던 이 곡은 단순한 유행가로 잊혀지지 않고 매년 크리스마스 시즌이 되면 어김없이 전세계에서 불리우며 그 위상이 점점 더 높아져 갔고, 언젠가부터 이 노래는 유행가가 아닌 정규 "캐롤송"이 되었기 때문이다. 게다가, 셀 수 없을 정도로 아티스트들이 커버하면서 젊은 층에서는이 곡이 Wham!의 오리지널 곡인것을 모르는 경우도 많아졌을 정도이다. 여담으로 George Michael은 Wham! 시절 자신이 작곡한 노래 중에서 이 곡을 가장 자랑스러워한다고 했다.
