이 곡은 Kimberley Rew 가 Katrina and the Waves 의 1983년 정규 데뷔 앨범을 위해 쓴 노래로, 재녹음된 버전은 밴드의 1985년 셀프 타이틀 앨범의 두 번째 싱글로 발매 되었으며 빌보드 차트 9위, UK 차트 8위, 호주 차트 4위에 오르는 등 많은 사랑을 받았다. 이 곡은 Waves의 첫 빌보드 TOP 40에 진입한 히트곡이었고 이 후 "Love Shine Light "(1997) 까지 영국에서 큰 성공을 거두기도 했다.

Katrina and the Waves는 이 곡의 판권을 계속 유지했으며, 일반적으로 작곡가에게 돌아가는 로열티는 밴드 멤버들에게 분배되었다고 한다. 그리고 이 곡은 2010년까지 10년 동안 연간 100만 달러를 벌어 들인 것으로 추산된다고 하니 얼마나 오랜시간동안 많은 이들에게 사랑을 받았는지 짐작이 되는 부분이다.

2010년은 "Walking on Sunshine"의 발매 25주년이 되는 해였으며, 당시 일련의 백 카탈로그 재발매와 재녹음 버전이 발매되었다

그리고 이 곡의 발매 30주년이 되는 2015년 8월, 이 노래는 Kimberley Rew와 Katrina and Waves가 작곡한 다른 모든 노래들과 함께 BMG Rights Management 에 1천만 파운드 에 인수되기도 했다. 발매된지 무려 30년이 지난 후에 판권을 1천만 파운드에 판매할 수 있을 정도의 힘을 가진 곡을 보니 다시금 문화의 힘, 음악의 힘을 느끼게 된다.
