"Can't Smile Without You" 는 Christian Arnold, David Martin, Geoff Morrow가 작곡한 곡으로 1975년 David Martin이 솔로 싱글로 처음 녹음하여 발표했다. 1976년 The Carpenters도 이 곡을 커버했는데, <A Kind of Hush>에 수록하여 발표 했다.

이 후 Barry Manilow가 커버하여 1978년에 <Even Now> 앨범에 수록하여 발표한 버전이 대중에게 가장 많은 사랑을 받으면서 널리 알려졌는데,

​그 는 이 곡을 1978년에 싱글로 발매하여 Billboard Adult Contemporary 차트에서 1위, Billboard Hot 100 차트 에서 3위를 차지하는등 많은 사랑을 받았다.

Manilow의 버전은 Carpenters의 가사가 약간 다든데, Carpenters의 "I can't laugh and I can't walk/I'm finding it hard even to talk"가 Manilow 버전에서 "I can't laugh and I can't sing/I'm finding it hard to do anything"으로 변경되었다.

Billboard 는 Manilow의 버전이  부드러운 휘파람처럼 달콤하게"sweetly with a soft whistle" 시작하고 그의 다른 인기곡들처럼 노래가 진행될 수록 강렬하게 구축된다builds in intensity over the course of the song고 평가하기도 했다.
