For Once in My Life "는 Ron Miller 와 Orlando Murden이 작곡한 곡 으로 1965년에 초도 녹음되었을 때는 슬로우 발라드 곡으로 만들어 졌고, 이 후 모타운 레코드의 많은 아티스트들이 커버 하였는데, 이는 모타운 레코드의 사장 Berry Gordy가 타사의 아티스트들이 이 곡을 부르는 것을 달가와 하지 않았기 때문이라고 한다.

Stevie Wonder의 버전은 1976년 녹음되었는데, 모타운 레코드의 사장 Berry Gordy는 Stevie의 경쾌한 버전을 좋아하지 않았기에, 싱글 발매를 거부하여 녹음은 보류되었고, Motown 품질 관리 부서의 책임자인 Billie Jean Brown이 Gordy를 끈질기게 설득하여 1968년 10월에 Stevie Wonder의 버전이 출시될 수 있었다고 한다.

자신의 감에 크게 좌우되던 모타운 레코드의 사장 Berry Gordy의 예상과는 달리 Stevie Wonder의 경쾌한 버전 은 빌보드 팝 싱글 과 빌보드 R&B 싱글에서 모두 2위에 오르는 등 크게 성공하게 되는데, 빌보드 No.1을 놓치게 된것은 같은 회사의 Marvin Gaye가 발표한 <I Heard It Through The Grapevine>과의 경쟁에서 밀렸기 때문 이었다.
