To Be with You - Mr. Big.1991(이야기들)

"To Be with You"는 미국의 록 밴드 Mr. Big의 두 번째 앨범 <Lean into It>의 수록곡으로 밴드의 메인 보컬인 Eric Martin이 작사 작곡 하였고, 당시 같은 레이블에 소속되어 있떤 전문 작곡가 David Grahame이 곡을 매끄럽게 다듬었으며, Kevin Elson이 프로듀싱 하였다.

(밴드의 기타리스트이자 정신적 지주였던 Paul Gilbert가 이 곡의 전반적인 부분을 다시 어레인지해서 잘 가다듬어놓은 것으로 널리 알려져 있지만, 이상하게도 정작 저작권 크래딧에 이름을 올리지는 않았다.)

 

 

앨범의 두 번째 싱글로 발매되어 빌보드 HOT100에서 3주간 1위를 차지했고, 유로HOT100, 호주, 뉴질랜드, 독일, 오스트리아, 네덜란드, 벨기에, 덴마크, 노르웨이, 스웨덴, 스위스 등에서 1위를 차지했으며, 영국 3위, 캐나다 4위를 기록하며 전세계적으로 크게 사랑받았다.

 

 

이 곡은 밴드의 메인 보컬인 Eric Martin이 십대시절 작곡& 작곡했는데, 짝사랑했던 동네 누나 "Patricia Reynolds"에 대한 사모곡이었다고 한다. 그녀는 속칭 노는 누나였고, 주변에 많은 남자들이 본인을 하찮게 쓰고버리듯 대해도 그게 잘나가는 거라고 착각하며 여러남자들과 동시에 관계하며 자신의 가치를 스스로 낮추는 그런 타입의 외모만 이쁜 여자였던 듯 하다.

이 곡의 메가히트로 밴드의 운명은 완전히 바뀌었고, 단박에 전세계에서 모르는 이가 없는 슈퍼스타가 되어 버린다.사실 이들의 본질은 헤비메탈 이었지만, 2집에서 이 곡의 대 성공으로 어른들의 사정으로 인해 본의 아니게 하드록 -> 소프트록으로 순한맛이 되어갔다.

 

 

사실, 이 곡이 발표되었을때만해도 이미 Rock 스피릿이 지배하던 시대는 오래전에 지나갔기에 모두들 디스코를 거쳐 Pop에 열광 하던 때였고, 완전히 달라진 음악계의 판도에서 록밴드는 힘든 시절이었지만, 이 한곡으로 앨범에 실린 다양한 실험요소 가득한 곡들을 전세계에 소개하며 록 스피릿의 불꽃이 꺼지지 않게 해주었던 그들이었다.

 

 

밴드의 보컬리스트 Eric Martin은 세계적으로 대표적인 'Blue Eyed Soul'(블루 아이드 소울)로 흑인들이 가지는 그 특유의 소울풀한 감정을 흑인들보다 더 잘 쳐내는 유니크한 보컬리스트였고,

 

바른생활 사나이와도 같았던 드러머 Pat Torpey는 천재적인 리듬감으로 드럼계에서는 손가락에 꼽는 음악인이었고, 멤버들이 나가고 들어오는 와중에도 의리파로 마지막까지 밴드를 지켰던 원년멤버였지만, 안타깝게도 파킨슨 병으로 인해 2018년 향년 64세로 세상을 떠나기도 했다. ( 편히 쉬세요 Pat...)
