We Are Family - Sister Sledge.1979(이야기들)

"We Are Family"는 미국의 걸그룹인 Sister Sledge의 세 번째 앨범 <We Are Family>의 수록곡으로 Bernard Edwards와 Nile Rodgers가 만들고, 프로듀싱까지 하였다.

 

 

앨범의 타이틀 곡으로 첫 번째 싱글로 발매되어 빌보드 댄스 클럽 송 차트에서 1위에 올랐꼬, 빌보드 HOT100에서는 2위까지 올랐으며, 캐나다 차트에서 1위에 올랐다. 영국, 뉴질랜드, 스위스등에서 TOP10에 오르며 많은 사랑을 받았다. (빌보드 HOT 100에서는 Donna Summer의 Hot Stuff에 밀려 아쉽게도 1위에 오르지 못했다.)

 

이 곡은 당시 19세였던 Kathy Sledge가 single take(원테이크)로 녹음을 완료한것이 두고두고 회자된다.

 

이 곡은 2017년에 "culturally, historically, or artistically significant."(문화적으로, 역사적으로 또는 예술적으로 중요한) 이유로 Library of Congress(의회 도서관)의 National Recording Registry(국립 녹음 등록부) 보존 대상으로 선정되기도 했고,

 

빌보드가 선정한 "100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of All Time"(역사상 가장 위대한 걸그룹 음악 100선)에서 20위에 올랐고, 롤링스톤지가 선정한 "200 Greatest Dance Songs of All Time"(역사상 가장 위대한 댄스음악 200선)에서 34위에 오르기도 했다.

 

이 곡을 만들고 프로듀싱한 Nile Rodgers와 Bernard Edwards는 디스코 그룹인 Chic에서 스스로 곡을 만들어서 히트시켜왔는데, Atlantic Records의 사장 Jerry L. Greenberg는 이 두 사람에게 레이블에 소속된 다른 아티스트를 위해 곡을 만들고 프로듀싱 해주기를 제안했지만, 그들은 The Rolling Stones(롤링 스톤즈) 나 Bette Midler(베트 미들러)와 같은 초대형 아티스트와 작업할 만큼의 자신감이 없었고, 또한 작업을 한다 해도 공로는 그들에게 다 돌아가고 자신들은 충분한 주목을 받지 못할것이라고 생각했다.

 

 

그랬기에 그 둘은 레이블에서 가장 덜 알려진 아티스트를 위해 곡을 쓰고 프로듀싱 할 것을 사장에게 역제안 한다. 그 이유는 그렇게 마이너한 아티스트를 성공 시켜야 그 이후에 히트작 제조기로써 메인스트림의 정상에 있는 유명 아트스트들과 동등하게 작업을 하고 또한 공로와 보상도 적절하게 요구할 수 있을 것이라는 생각에서 였다.

 

그렇게 Nile Rodgers와 Bernard Edwards는 사장 Jerry L. Greenberg로 부터 Sister Sledge라는 4명의 자매로 된 걸그룹이 있다는 것을 제안받았고, 별 의미없이 "We are Family"라고 중얼거렸는데 그것이 제목이자 후렴구가 되었다.
