"I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)"는 미국의 락 가수이자 배우인 Meat Loaf(본명 : Marvin Lee Aday)의 두 번째 앨범 <Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell>의 수록곡으로 Jim Steinman이 작사작곡하였고, 프로듀싱까지 하였다.

 

 

앨범의 첫 번째 싱글로 발매된 이 곡은 빌보드 HOT100에서 1위를 차지했고, 영국, 캐나다, 호주, 뉴질랜드, 오스트리아, 벨기에, 덴마크, 유로HOT100, 독일, 프랑스, 아일랜드, 아이슬란드, 리투아니아, 네덜란드, 노르웨이, 스웨덴, 스위스 등 28개국에서 차트 1위를 차지하며 전세계적으로 크게 사랑받았으며, Grammy Award 에서Best Rock Vocal Performance, Solo 부문을 수상하였다.

 

 

이 싱글은 미국에서 플래티넘 인증을 받았으며 Billboard Hot 100 차트와 UK 싱글 차트에서 1위를 차지한 첫 번째이자 마지막 싱글이 되었으며, 1993년 영국에서 가장 많이 팔린 싱글로 기록된다.

 

전작인 그의 1977년 데뷔앨범 <Bat Out of Hell>은 전세계적으로 4,300만장이 팔리는 어마어마한 대성공을 거두었었는데, 후속작인 본 앨범의 리드 싱글인 이 곡이 대 히트를 하며 명맥을 이어나갔지만, 그 후로는 괄목할 만한 히트작은 없었다.

뮤직비디오는 세계적인 블록버스터 영화 감독인 마이클 베이가 감독하여, 오프닝 추격 장면은 Chávez Ravine에서 촬영하였고 내부 맨션 장면은 Beverly Hills의 Greystone Mansion에서 촬영 되었다. 촬영 감독은 1973년 The Texas Chain Saw Massacre(텍사스 전기톱 학살)을 촬영했던 Daniel Pearl(다니엘 펄)이 맡아 영화처럼 웅장하게 제작되었다.

 

촬영감독 Daniel Pearl(다니엘 펄)은 "is one of my personal all-time favorite projects... I think the cinematography is pure, and it tells a story about the song."(이 작업은 개인적으로 제가 가장 좋아하는 작업이었어요. 제 생각에 촬영기법이 이 완전했고 노래에 대한 스토리를 잘 보여주었다고 생각해요.) 라고 밝혔다.

 

 

마이클 베이가 감독을 맡았으니 당연히 예상이 되지만, 예산은 곧바로 초과되었고, 레이블의 한 임원에 따르면 "probably had the budget of Four Weddings and a Funeral."(아마 영화 네 번의 결혼식과 한 번의 장례식을 만들만한 예산이 들어갔었을 것)이라고 한다.

 

 

130kg이 넘는 육중한 거구의 몸이 마치 고깃덩어리 같다는 별칭이었는데 그것을 그대로 활동명으로 차용해서 썼던 그는 의외로 social anxiety(사회적 불안)이 있어서 파티와 같은 곳에 가는것을 꺼려고 뮤지션들과 사교적 시간을 가지기 보다는 일과 관련된 시간을 보내며 "even go anywhere"(심지어 어디도 가지 않고) "boring life"(지루한 삶)을 살고 있다고 했는데, "I never meet anybody much in a social situation because when I go into a social situation, I have no idea what to do."(나는 사회적 상황에 놓여졌을때, 뭘 해야할 지 모르기 때문에 사회적인 상황에서 사람을 많이 만나지 않았죠) 라고 말하기도 했다.

 

 

일부 극성 공화당 지지자들과 결을 같이 하는 매우 강경한 백신 음모론자였다. 백신을 맞을 바엔 차라리 COVID-19에 걸려 죽는 게 낫다고 말할 정도였는데, 결국 말년에 코로나에 감염된 후 중증으로까지 악화되고 2022년 1월 20일 향년 74세의 나이로 자택에서 가족들 품에서 사망했다

(사실 그는 비대한 체격 탓에 평생 온갓 잔병치레를 해왔던 터라, 코로나 감염이 그의 사망과 직접적인 관련이 있는지는 정확히 알 수 없다.)
