"As It Was"는 영국의 팝아티스트 Harry Styles의 세 번째 스튜디오 앨범인 <Harry's House>에 수록된 곡으로 Harry Styles & Thomas Hull & Tyler Johnson이 함께 만들었고, Kid Harpoon & Tyler Johnson이 프로듀싱 하였다.

 

 

앨범의 리드 싱글로 발매된 이 곡은 빌보드 HOT 100에서 화려하게 HOT SHOT 데뷔하며(1위로 차트진입) 그의 두 번째 차트 1위곡이 되었고 무려 10주간이나 차트 정상을 차지했다. UK차트에서는 무려 11주 연속으로 1위를 차지했으며, 캐나다, 호주, 프랑스, 오스트리아등 전 세계 33개국에서 차트 1위에 오르며 큰 상업적 성공을 거뒀다.

 

이로써 Harry Styles는 원디렉션 출신 멤버들 중에서 유일하게 두 곡 이상의 차트 No.1 히트곡을 보유하게 되었다.

 

 

이 곡을 듣는 순간 약간의 기시감이 느껴지면서 '엇? 이 노래 weeknd 노래 아닌가?' 하는 생각이 들게 되는데, 그 이유는 "As It Was"가 캐나다의 싱어송라이터인 Weeknd의 "Blinding Lights"와 아주 유사한 스타일을 가지고 있기 때문이다. 이 곡의 구성과 관련하여 Variety誌의 Chris Willman(크리스 윌먼)은 이 곡이 Depeche Mode(디페쉬 모드)와 A-ha(아하)에서 Heavy Inspiration(큰 영감)을 얻었으며, Weeknd의 2019년 싱글 "Blinding Lights"와 매우 유사한 스타일을 채택했다고 밝혔다.

뮤직비디오는 런던의 Barbican 단지 외곽, 국회의사당 근처의 Lindley Hall, 런던 동물원의 penguin pool에서 촬영이 되었고, 댄서인 Mathilde Lin과 함께 안무를 소화해 냈다.

뮤직비디오는 Tanu Muino이 감독했는데, 그는 Harry Styles와의 협업이 자신의 버킷리스트중 하나였다며 행복해 했지만, 뮤직비디오의 촬영 둘째 날 자신의 고향인 우크라이나가 러시아의 침공을 받게 되면서 그 과정이 "bittersweet"(달콤씁쓸한) 경험이 되어 버렸다..

 

 

하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 Tanu Muino 감독과 우크라이나의 팀은 아래와 같은 소감을 밝히고 전쟁에 참전하기 위해 고국으로 돌아갔다.
