New York State Of Mind - Billy Joel.1976(이야기들)

"New York State of Mind"는 미국의 싱어송라이터 Billy Joel의 네 번째 앨범 <Turnstiles>에 수록된 곡으로 Billy Joel 본인이 작곡하고 프로듀싱까지 한 곡이다.

 

 

이 곡은 싱글로 발매된 적이 없기에 차트 순위는 기록되지 않았지만, 그를 대표하는 곡중의 하나로 세월이 흘러도 팬들이 가장 좋아하는 노래가 되었으며, 콘서트장에서 반드시 연주하는 곡이다.

 

 

Billy Joel은 인터뷰에서 이 곡에 대한 영감이 LA에서 New York으로 돌아오던 바로 그날 허드슨 강가를 지나며 떠올랐다고 밝혔는데, 첫 번째 앨범 < Cold Spring Harbor> 발매 이후 LA로 이사하여 두 번째 앨범 <Piano Man>을 내면서 첫 번째 성공을 거두지만 거의 정산을 받지못해 빈털털이 생활이 이어졌고, 세 번째 앨범 <Streetlife Serenade>는 이전 앨범에 비해 주춤하면서 그는 약 4년여의 LA 생활을 접고 다시 고향인 New York으로 돌아가게 되었는데, Greyhound (그레이하운드) 버스를 타고 허드슨 강변을 지날때 노트를 꺼내어 곡을 쓰기 시작했고, 집에 돌아와서 피아노에 앉아 한 시간만에 곡을 완성했다고 한다.

 

 

미국인들에게 있어서 LA라는 곳에 있는 사람들은 모두들 꿈을 찾아 잠시 스쳐가는 뜨네기들만 있는 곳일 뿐이라는 인식이 강한데(물론 LA에서 대를 이어 태어나고 자라고 살아가는 수많은 사람들도 있지만), 한국인들이 대부분 New York이 힙하고 첨단을 달리는 강남과 같다고 오해하기 쉬운데 실제로 영화나 드라마의 인트로에 나오는 맨하탄 섬을 생각하면 곤란하다.

 

도심쪽이라면 브롱크스나 퀸즈등의 New York은 오래되고, 어둡고, 지저분하고 좁고, 부데끼는 느낌이 강한 곳이라면, Billy의 고향인 Highland Falls와 같은 곳은 그냥 시골의 느낌이다.

굳이 비유를 하자면 New York주는 넉넉하진 않았어도 편안했던 어린시절의 기억들이 가득한 강북의 느낌이라고 한다면, LA는 청운의 꿈을 안고 찾아간 청담동 정도로 비유한다면 크게 틀리지 않을것 같다.
