"Mandy"는 미국의 싱어송라이터인 Barry Manilow의 <Barry Manilow II>에 수록된 곡으로 Scott English와 Richard Kerr가 작곡하였다.

 

 

 

 

 

빌보드 HOT 100에서 1위를 차지했고, Easy Listening 차트 1위, 캐나다 차트 1위, 캐나다 AC차트 1위, 호주와 아일랜드에서 TOP 5에 들었고, UK차트에서는 12위, 서독차트에서 19위에 오르는등 크게 성공하며 많은 사랑을 받았다.

 

 

그리고 무엇보다도 이 곡은 Barry Manilow의 생에 첫 번째 골드 싱글이되었기에 그에게는 의미가 큰 곡이라 할 수 있다..

 

 

 

 

이곡의 오리지널은 이 곡을 썼던 Scott English가 직접 부르고 프로듀싱까지 한 1971년 버전으로, UK Singles Chart의 TOP 20위에 오르는등 많은 사랑을 받았다. 그리고 1972년 뉴질랜드의 가수 Bunny Walters가 커버했지만, 큰 성공은 없었고, 1974년 Barry Manilow가 미국에서 자신의 버전을 발표하면서 대성공을 거두게 된다.

 

 

Manilow의 버전은 그가 레이블을 Arista로 이적한 큰 모험을 한 후의 첫 작업이었기에 부담이 매우 컸다고 하는데, 작업을 하면서 Jersey Shore Sound로 유명한 록그룹 Looking Glass의 "Brandy(You're Fine Girl)"라는 곡 과의 혼동을 피하기 위해 제목을 "Brandy"에서 "Mandy"로 변경했다고 한다.

 

 

상대적으로 젊은층이 이 곡을 들었을때 뭔가 기시감과 비슷한 느낌이 들 수 있는데, 이유는 바로 이 곡을 2003년에 아일랜드의 보이밴드 Westlife가 커버했기 때문일 것이다. 그들의 버전도 UK차트 및 아일랜드 차트에서 1위를 차지하기도 했다.

 

비에 젖은 도시의 야경을 바라보며 감상하다보면 성공을 위해 앞만보고 달려가느라 자신의 곁에 있었던 사랑을 그것이 찾아왔었는지도 모르고 무심하게 떠나버리게 했던 지난날을 후회하는 화자의 마음을 이해할 수 있을 것만 같다.
