"Candle in the Wind"는 영국을 대표하는 싱어송 라이터인 Elton John이 1973년 발표한 7번 째 앨범 <Goodbye Yellow Brick Road>에 수록된 곡으로, Elton John이 작곡하고 Bernie Taupin이 작사 하였으며, Gus Dudgeon이 프로듀싱한 Threnody [비가(悲歌) 혹은 애가(哀歌)]이다.

 

1974 Version

 

1974년 2월 싱글로 발매되어 영국 11위, 호주 5위, 뉴질랜드 5위, 아일랜드 8위를 기록했고, 1986년 호주 시드니에서 녹음한 라이브 버전이 크게 인기를 끌면서 1987년에 <Live in austrailia>에 수록했는데, 1988년에 영국 차트 5위, 빌보드 차트 6위까지 오르며 많은 사랑을 받았다.

그리고 1997년에 교통사고로 사망한 영국의 왕세자비 Diana Spencer의 장례식에서 추모곡을 불러달라는 버킹검 궁의 부탁을 받고 가사 일부를 개사한 버전을 내놓게 되는데, 제목은 "Candle in the Wind1997"로 명명하고, 첫 소절도 "Goodbye, Norma Jeane"을 "Goodbye, England's Rose"로 개사했다.

1997년 버전을 은 빌보드 HOT 100에서 무려 14주간이나 1위를 차지하고, 영국 차트에서도 5주간 1위를 차지한 것을 비롯하여 다수의 국가에서 1위를 차지했으며, 월드와이드 3천 3백만 장 이상의 판매고를 올리면서, 5천만 장 이상의 판매를 거둔 빙 크로스비의 1942년 곡 White Christmas에 이어 역사상 두 번째로 많이 팔린 싱글이자 세계에서 가장 많이 팔린 CD 싱글, 세계에서 가장 빠르게 팔린 싱글로 집계되며 기네스북에도 공식적으로 올랐다.

(영국 재무부에서는 이 싱글에 대한 부가가치세를 면제해주기도 했고, 수익금은 다이애나비 기념재단에 기부했다.)

오리지널 버전은 Marilyn Monroe(마를린 먼로 : 본명 : Norma Jeane Mortenson)를 가사에 넣어서 그녀를 추모하기 위해 만들어졌다고 많이들 잘못 알려졌었는데, 가사를 만든 Bernie Taupin은 사실 마를린 먼로의 이름을 넣은것은 그녀의 이름을 상징적으로 사용한 은유일 뿐, 화려한 명성 속에서 행복한 삶을 보내지 못하고 요절한 인기 연예인들을 다룬 내용이라고 밝혔다. 그 주인공은 제임스 딘이 될 수도 있고 짐 모리슨이 될 수도 있으며, 작가와 배우, 가수 등 경력의 전성기에 생을 마감한 모든 사람에게 해당하는 곡이라고 밝히기도 했다.

피아노로 잔잔히 시작하다가 후렴부터 백업 밴드 엘튼 존 밴드의 연주와 함께 한층 거센 분위기를 이끄는 발라드인 이 곡은 짙은 구름이 낮게 깔린 오늘 같은 날에 감성적이 되는 무드에 잘 어울리는 곡이 아닐까 싶다.
