"Cheerleader"는 자메이카 출신 가수 OMI(본명 : Omar Samuel Pasley)의 앨범 <Me 4 U>에 수록된 곡으로 OMI & Clifton Dillon & Mark Bradford & Ryan Dillon이 함께 만들었고, OMI & Clifton Dillon가 함께 프로듀싱 하였다.

 

 

2012년 발표된 오리지널 버전은 크게 인기를 끌지 못하고 뭍혔는데,

 

2015년 독일출신 DJ인 Felix Jaehn이 제작한 REMIX 버전이 크게 인기를 끌면서 역주행을 하여 빌보드 HOT 100에서 6주간 1위를 차지하고, 영국, 호주, 캐나다, 프랑스, ​​멕시코, 아일랜드, 스웨덴, 독일을 포함한 20여개국의 차트에서 1위에 오르는 등 대단한 상업적 성공을 거두었다.

 

 

 

 

배철수의 음악캠프의 배철수DJ는 처음 이 곡을 들었을때 '뭐 이런곡이 빌보드 HOT 100에서 1위를 하지?' 라며 사람들이 왜 좋아하는지 이해하기 어렵다고 생각했었는데, 그 후 여름 휴가로 떠났던 하와이에서 해안도로를 달리던 중 라디오에서 이 곡이 흘러나왔는데, 하화이의 풍경과 여름에 이 곡이 그렇게 잘 어울릴 수가 없었다고 한다. 그제서야 '아~ 이래서 이 곡이 차트 1위를 했구나' 하고 생각했다고....

 

 

 

이 한곡의 성공으로 이름을 떨쳤지만, One Hit Wonder로 끝나버린 OMI(본명 : Omar Samuel Pasley)는 2008년 처음 후렴구의 멜로디가 떠올라 이 곡을 만들기 시작하여 자메이카의 유명 프로듀서였던 Clifton Dillon과 함께 몇 년에 걸친 곡을 다듬는 과정을 거쳐 2012년에 베테랑 세션 뮤지션인 Sly Dunbar와 Robbie & Dean Fraser와 함께 처음 이 곡을 녹음하였는데, 앨범에 수록된 오리지널 앨범은 자메이카 차트에서는 1위를 하는 선에서 끝나게 된다.

 

 

 

그렇게 이 곡은 묻혀졌는데, 레이블이었던 Ultra는 원곡의 리믹스 버전을 제작하기 위해 두 명의 디스크 자키와 접촉했고, trumpet, conga beat, piano의 음색이 두드러지는게 특징인 tropical-flavored(트로피컬 풍미)의 딥 하우스 버전을 제시한 젊은 독일출신의 DJ였던 Felix Jaehn이 제작한 버전을 채택한다.

그리고, 그 리믹스 버전은 소위 말하는 대박을 치게되고, 2015년 5월 Ultra에서 출시되면서 전세계적인 성공을 거두었다.
