"When I Was Your Man"은 Bruno Mars의 두 번째 스튜디오 앨범 <Unorthodox Jukebox>의 수록곡으로 Bruno Mars & Philip Lawrence, Ari Levine & Andrew Wyatt가 함께 만들었고, The Smeezingtons가 프로듀싱 하였다.

이 앨범은 미국내에서만 1,100만장을 판매하며 미국 음반 산업 협회(RIAA)로부터 Diamond Certification (11x Platinum)을 받는가 하면, 호주 음반 산업 협회(ARIA)에서 (6x Platinum) 600만장 인증을 받았고, 뮤직 캐나다(MC)에서 (9x Platinum) 900만장 인증을 받으며 대히트를 기록했는데, 이 곡의 디지털 싱글은 2013년 세계에서 8번째로 많이 팔리면서 무려 830만장을 판매하기도 했다.

 

 

이 곡의 가사는 애인에게 더 잘해주지 못한 과거의 자신에 대해 후회하며 그녀를 그리워하는 남자의 독백을 담고 있는데, 브루노 마스가 당시 여자 친구였던 Jessica Caban을 잃게될까 걱정하던 시기의 기억에서 영감을 받아 가사를 쓰게 되었다고 한다.

 

오로지 피아노 & 본인의 보컬만으로 구성된 이 곡은 자신의 실제 경험에서 영감을 얻어 창작된 곡이라서일까, 그의 보컬에서 애절함과 감성이 더없이 폭발적으로 묻어나오는데, 평단에서는 대부분의 비평가들의 극찬을 아끼지 않았다.

 

참고로 이 곡의 뮤직비디오는 80년대 비디오 테이프(VHS)가 떠오르는 오래된 필름의 효과가 나도록 제작되었는데, 이 후 동명의 앨범의 수록곡 'Treasure'의 뮤직비디오는 효과는 물론 화질까지 480p로 업로드 되어 마치 진짜 오래전에 제작된 비디오를 보는 듯한 느낌도 주었다.
