"So Sick"은 미국의 싱어송라이터 Ne-Yo의 데뷔 스튜디오 앨범인 <In My Own Words>의 수록곡으로 Ne-Yo가 작사하였으며 Stargate가 작곡 및 프로듀싱 하였다.

Stargate : LA에 기반을 두고 있는 Mikkel S. Eriksen과 Tor E. Hermansen으로 구성된 음반 제작 및 작곡 팀으로 아래 나열하는 세기의 슈퍼스타들에게 명작들을 만들어 주었다.

이 곡은 2005년 11월 본 앨범의 두 번째 싱글로 발매되어 미국 빌보드 HOT 100, UK 싱글, EURO HOT 100, 캐나다, 벨기에등에서 1위를 차지하며 전세계적으로 히트했는데, Ne-Yo를 얘기하면 바로 떠오르는 그를 상징하는 대표곡이 되었며, 그전까지는 Mario의 "Let Me Love You"로 유명세를 떨쳤던 "작곡가 Ne-Yo"를 "R&B 가수 니요"로 바꾸어 준 곡이 된다.

 

 

 

Stargate가 이 곡을 작곡하는 동안 Ne-Yo는 곡의 가사를 썼는데, 내용은 라디오에서 흘러나오는 사랑노래가 지나간 연인과의 사랑과 이별을 떠올리게 하여 지친다는 내용을 담고 있는데, Ne-Yo는 인터뷰에서 그가 전 여자친구와의 연애 경험으로부터 이 곡에 대한 아이디어를 얻었다고 밝혔다.

 

이 세상의 모든 젊은 남자& 여자들은 언제나 미숙하다. 자신의 곁을 지고지순하게 지켜주던 사랑을 떠나보낸 후에야 시간이 지나 그녀(그)의 조건없는 사랑이 얼마나 과분하고 값진 것이었는지 뒤늦게 알고 회한에 빠지게 되기 미련이다. 시대를 풍미했던 수많은 슈퍼 히트곡들은 모두 그런 미숙한 남자&여자들의 후회와 회한을 진심으로 녹여낸 곡들이 많았고, 그 애절함이 청자들의 심금을 울리게 만드는 것이 아닐까.

 

"So Sick"은 대중의 열렬한 사랑과 더불어 평단으로부터도 광범위하게 호평을 받았는데,

 

"About"의 Bill Lamb은 "smooth instrumental of the song makes it stand out and appropriate to listen during mid-winter season."(곡의 부드러운 기악이 돋보이며 한겨울 시즌에 듣기에 적절하다) 곡이 만듬새를 극찬했고, Contactmusic.com의 리뷰는 그의 보컬 표현을 "stunning"(굉장하다)고 표현하며 Stargate 프로덕션을 칭찬하면서 "Melodic Masterpiece"(멜로딕 걸작) 이라며 극찬하기도 했다.

 

이 곡의 뮤직 비디오는 Hype Williams가 감독하여 미국 콜로라도의 Aspen에서 촬영되었는데, 눈 덮힌 야외와 맨션내부에서 촬영되었다. 그런데. 뮤비가 촬영되었던 맨션에 대해 Ne-Yo는 "The house we rented out was ridiculous. The walls turned, and there were heated floors. It was crazy."(우리가 빌린 집은 재미있는 곳이었어요, 벽은 돌아가고, 바닥에 난방이 되더라구요."

 

아마도 겨울에 익숙치 않은 Ne-Yo는 바닥을 덮혀서 공간 전체를 오랜시간 따듯하게 유지시킬 수 있는 온돌의 과학적 우수성을 몰랐던 듯 하다.

 

cf: Ne-Yo는 패션센스가 굉장히 좋고 다른 여타 흑인 가수들이 깡패처럼 옷을 입느것과는 달리 젠틀한 옷차림을 선호하는 것으로 유명하다. 그리고 제일 중요한 '모자광'으로 매우 유명한데, 외출할때의 필수품으로써 는 장소와 자리에 따라 중절모, 야구모자, 비니, 두건등 여러가지의 모자를 필수적으로 착용하여 모자가 없으면 절대 외출하지 않는다고 알려져 있다.
