"If You Don't Know Me by Now"는 영국의 Pop & Soul 밴드 Simply Red의 세 번째 앨범 <A New Flame>의 수록곡으로 Kenny Gamble와 Leon Huff가 만들었고, Stewart Levine이 프로듀싱 하였다.

 

 

앨범의 두 번째 싱글로 발매되어 빌보드 HOT100과 빌보드 AC차트에서 1위를 차지했고, 호주, 뉴질랜드에서 1위를 차지했으며, 영국, 캐나다, 아일랜드, 네덜란드, 스웨덴, 노르웨이, 벨기에, 등에서 TOP5에 들며 많은 사랑을 받았다.

 

 

Simply Red는 이 곡으로 빌보드차트에서 두 번째로 1위를 차지하며 상업적으로 큰 성취를 이루었을 뿐만 아니라, 1989년 Grammy Award에서 Best R&B Song을 수상하는 영예를 가질 수 있었다.

 

 

이 곡의 프로듀서였던 Stewart Levine에 따르면 그는 곡작업시에 과도한 오케스트레이션(orchestration)을 원하지 않았기에, 오리지널 버전에서는 세 파트로 되어 있던 하모니를 두 파트로 된 하모니로 바꿨다. 밴드의 리더였던Mick Hucknall은 오리지널 버전에 대한 리스펙트를 표하기도 했다.

이 곡은 1972년 미국 필라델피아 출신의 Soul Musical 그룹인 'Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes'가 녹음한 버전이 오리지널인데, 빌보드 R&B 차트에서 1위, 빌보드 HOT 100에서 3위를 기록하며 많은 사랑을 받았던 곡이었다.

 

 

그리고 오랜세월에 걸쳐 수많은 아티스트들이 커버했고, 펍 & 재즈클럽등에서는 빠지지 않고 연주되는 곡 중에 하나로 자리잡게 되었는데, RIAA( Recording Industry Association of America)에 의해 "Songs of the Century"(세기의 노래) 중 하나로 선정되기도 했다.
