"Dark Horse"는 그녀의 9번째 빌보드 HOT 100 1위곡으로 미국을 비롯하여 캐나다, 네덜란드 , 폴란드등에서 차트 1위를 기록했고, 뉴질랜드 , 영국, 스웨덴 , 베네수엘라 등 20여개국에서 TOP 10에 진입하여했으며, 무려 22주동안 빌보드 HOT 100에서 TOP 10에 머무르는 기록을 세웠다.

'다크호스'란 말은 일반적으로 능력이 감춰져 있거나 어떤 특정 분야의 능력에 다른 사람들에게 전혀 알려지지 않은 사람이 예상치 못하게 능력을 발휘할 때 사용하는 표현으로 우리 이상에서 쉽게 사용하는 말인데, 이 곡이 원래 프로모 싱글이였으나 의외로 엄청난 인기를 끌어 선전하면서, 신기하게도 작품이 제목을 따라간다는 업계에서의 미신을 또 한번 확인시켜주는 곡이 되었다.
이 곡은 1996년 '앤드류 플레밍(Andrew Fleming)' 감독의 영화 <크래프트(The Craft)>에서 영감을 얻었다고 전해진다. 케이티 페리와 싱어송라이터 Sarah Hudson은 캘리포니아 산타바바라에 있는 Katy Perry의 집에서 첫 버전을 만들었고, 래퍼 Juicy가 게스트로 이 곡에 참여할 의사를 밝히는데,
