"The Tide Is High"는 미국의 뉴 웨이브 밴드 Blondie의 다섯 번 째 정규 앨범 <Autoamerican>의 수록곡으로 John Holt가 만들었고, Mike Chapman이 프로듀싱 하였다.

 

 

앨범의 리드 싱글로 발매된 이곡은 빌보드 HOT 100에서 3주간 1위를 차지했고, 영국, 캐나다, 뉴질랜드에서 1위를 차지했으며, 호주, 오스트리아, 벨기에, 아일랜드, 네덜란드, 노르웨이, 남아공, 스위스등에서 TOP 5에 들며 크게 사랑받았다. (미국에서는 차트 1위를 차지한 세 번째 싱글곡이 되었으며, 영국에서는 1위를 차지한 다섯 번째 싱글이 되었다.

 

 

이 곡은 원래 1967년 자메이카 출신의 싱어송라이터인 John Holt가 작곡하고 Duke Reid가 프로듀싱하여 자메이카의 rocksteady vocal trio(록 스테디 보컬 트리오) the Paragons가 연주했던 록스테디 곡으로, 곡을 만든 John Holt가 리드 싱어로 불렀던 곡이다.

 

 

오리지널 버전은 영국과 자메이카에서의 작은 인지도를 얻었고 크게 성공하지 못했는데, Blondie가 커버 버전을 내면서 전세계적으로 크게 성공했을뿐 아니라, 평단에서도 다수의 평론가들로부터 역대 최고의 곡이라며 칭송받으며 두마리 토끼를 모두 잡았다.
