Life Is Cool - Sweetbox.2004(이야기들)

"Life Is Cool"은 미국의 프로젝트 밴드인 Sweetbox의 네 번째 앨범 <Adagio>의 수록곡으로 보컬을 맡은 Jade Villalon와 Roberto Geo Rosan이 함께 만들고 Roberto Geo Rosan이 프로듀싱하였다.

 

 

정작 미국에서는 별다른 반응이 없었지만 이 곡이 수록된 4집 앨범 특히 "Life Is Cool"이 아시아에서 폭발적인 인기를 끌었는데, 특히 대한민국과 일본에서 많은 사랑을 받으면서 Platinum을 기록할 정도였고, 한국에서는 실물음반과 온라인 음원판매 외에도 당시 유행이었던 싸이월드에서만 배경음악으로 150만회 이상 도토리로 판매되며 1위에 오를 정도로 엄청나게 높은 판매고를 기록하기도 했다.

 

 

이 곡은 Johann Pachelbel(요한 파헬벨)의 Canon D Major를 샘플링 했는데, 멜로디라인이 기타로 쳤을 경우 C-G-Am-F (변주 : E-B-C#m-A) 로 이어지는데 현대인에게 있어 동서양을 막론하고 거부감이 없이 편안하게 받아들여지기에 이 진행방식을 사용한 것은 흔히 Money code라 불리우며 수많은 곡에 샘플링 되거나 혹은 비슷한 진행 방식이 사용되기에 수만곡이 넘는 노래에서 표절 의혹이 쉽게 제기될 수 있을 정도로 사람들의 뇌리에 쉽고 깊게 각인된다. 그렇기에 또한 사람들에게 쉽게 사랑을 받을 수 있기도 하다.

영역 = Canon and Gigue in D Major for 3 Violins and Figured Bass.

독일의 음악가 Johann Pachelbel(요한 파헬벨)이 약 1694년 경 작곡한 Canon과 Gigue(지그)로, 카논 중에서 대중적으로 가장 유명하다. 게다가 이 곡은 바흐와 깊은 인연이 있는 곡인데 1694년 10월 23일에 있었던 바흐의 큰 형이자 파헬벨의 제자인 요한 크리스토프 바흐(1671~1721)의 결혼식에 쓰이기 위해 헌정되었다는 설이 있다.

 

 

Sweetbox는 독일 출신의 미국인인 총괄 프로듀서 Heiko Schmidt와 음악 프로듀서인 Roberto Geo Rosan이 1995년 결성한 팝 뮤직 프로젝트 밴드로, 오랜 시간동안 1대 보컬 Kimberly Kearney, 2대 보컬 Dacia Bridges, 3대 보컬 Tina Harris, 4대 보컬 Jade Villalon, 5대 보컬 Jamie Pineda, 6대 보컬 Miho Fukuhara, 7대 보컬 LogiQ Pryce로 바뀌어 가며 오랫동안 활동해왔는데, 우리나라의 Page(강승윤)나 Toy(유희열)와 흡사하다고 볼 수 있다.

 

 

4대 보컬인 Jade Villalon은 음악 프로듀서 Roberto Geo Rosan와 콤비로 7년간 활동하고 둘이 함께 이 프로젝트 밴드를 떠났었는데, 2020년에 Jade Villalon와 Roberto Geo Rosan은 새로운 멤버 Saint Viv와 함께 Sweetbox로 돌아와서 새 앨범 <Da Capo>와 새 편집본인 <Happy Wedding Complete Best>를 발매 하기도 했다.
