[UB40] -Red Red Wine.1983-1988(가사, 영상, 얽힌 이야기)

"Red Red Wine"은 원래 미국의 싱어송라이터인 Neil Diamond가 1967년에 직접 작곡 & 연주 및 녹음했던 곡으로 그의 두 번째 스튜디오 앨범 <Just for You>에 수록되어 있었다. 적포도주를 마시는 것만이 자신의 슬픔을 잊을 수 있는 유일한 방법임을 깨닫는 화자(Neil Diamond 자신)의 관점에서 쓰여졌는데, 약간은 우울한 느낌의 어쿠스틱 발라드 곡이었다.

 

 

그 후 시간이 지나 1983년 영국의 레게그룹인 UB40에 의해 커버 되어, UK차트에서 1위에 올랐고 미국의 빌보드에서는 그럭저럭 선전했었는데, 988년에 그룹의 전 보컬이면서 트럼펫 연주자였던 Terence 'Astro' Wilson의 랩이 포함된 Extend version을 다시 발표하면서 그들의 1983년 버전보다 훨씬 더 대박을 쳐서 드디어 빌보드 HOT 100에서 1위를 탈환하며 미국, 영국, 캐나다, 아일랜드등에서 1위를 차지하며 많은 사랑을 받았다.

 

재미있는 사실이 하나 있는데, 그룹 UB40는 이 곡의 오리지널이 "Tony Tribe"의 버전인줄로 알고 있었고, 이 곡을 작곡하고 직접 불렀던 오리지널 싱어가 'Neil Diamond'인 줄은 몰랐다고 한다. 파이낸셜 타임즈와이 인터뷰에서 Terence 'Astro' Wilson은 "우리는 심지어 'N Diamond'라고 적힌 작곡가 크레딧을 보고도 그 이름이 Negus Diamond는 자메이카 아티스트인 줄 알았다"고 말했을 정도였다.

 

 

UB40의 버전은 오리지널인 Neil Diamond의 침울한 어쿠스틱 발라드에 비해 밝고 가벼운 레게 스타일의 풍미가 특징으로, 매우 흥미로운 사실은 원 곡의 창작자인 Neil Diamond 본인 조차도 자신이 불렀던 오리지널 버전보다는 UB40의 레게 편곡으로 라이브를 자주 한다는 사실이다.
