테일러 스위프트의 5집 앨범<1989>의 수록곡으로, Taylor Swift & Max Martin & Shellback이 공동으로 만들었고, Max Martin 과 Shellback이 프로듀싱 하였다.

 

2014년 9월 6일자 빌보드 HOT 100에서 1위로 HOTSHOT 데뷔하며, 빌보드 역사상 통산 22번째의 HOTSHOT 1위곡이자 Taylor Swift의 두 번째 1위곡이 되었다. 무려 24주간 TOP10에 머물렀고, 50주간 TOP100에 머물렀을 정도로 엄청난 사랑을 받았는데, 여러 기록을 세우고 엄청난 성적을 기록하며 팝으로의 성공적인 변신을 알렸다.

 

참고로 4집까지 컨트리 가수로 승승장구 했던 무려 183cm 장신의 그녀는, 이 곡의 대성공으로 팝가수로써 매우 성공적으로 전향하였는데, 팝가수로써는 키가 너무 크다는 지적에 자신의 키를 178cm로 줄여서 말하기도 했다.

 

2015년 제57회 그래미 어워드에서 Record of the Year & Song of the Year & Best Pop Solo Performance의 세 가지 부문에 노미네이트되었고, 2015 빌보드 뮤직 어워드(Billboard Music Awards )에서 3개 부문 후보에 올랐으며 Top Streaming Song(비디오) 부문을 수상했으며, 2016년 BMI 팝 어워드 에서 올해의 작곡가상을 수상하기도 했을뿐 아니라, 그외의 수많은 상을 수상하며 2014년 최고의 노래로 찬사를 받았다.

 

 

2020년 3월 드디어 미국 음반 산업 협회(RIAA)로 부터 미국내 판매량 1천만 Unit 이상을 증명하는 다이아몬드 인증을 받으면서, 앨범(Fearless)과 싱글(Shake It Off)에서 모두 다이아몬드 인증을 보유한 유일한 가수라는 기록을 세웠다.

뮤직비디오는 Mark Romanek 이 감독하였는데, 2022년2월 현재까지 누적 조회수가 무려 31억회를 넘기며 Katy Perry의 Roar에 밀려 여가수 뮤직비디오 최다 조회수 순위에서 2위를 기록하고 있다.

 

* 2015년 11월, 예명 제시 그레이엄(Jesse Graham)으로 알려진 R&B 가수 Jessie Braham은 테일러 스위프트가 자신의 자신의 2013년 곡 "Haters Gonna Hate"를 표절했다고 주장했다. 소송에서 그녀는 스위프트 의 'Shake It Off'의 92%가 자신의 노래에서 나왔다고 주장하며 스위프트와 배급사인 Sony Music에 4200만 달러의 손해 배상을 요구했으나 1심에서 패소했고 그 이후 별다른 움직임은 없는데.. 이 소송으로 자신의 인지도가 매우 높아졌기에 이를 노린것이 아닌가 하는 의심을 샀다.

 

* 2017년 9월, 작곡가 Sean "Sep" Hall과 Nate Butler 는 Swift를 저작권 침해 로 고소했습니다 . 그들은 "Shake It Off" 가사가 걸그룹 3LW 의 곡 " Playas Gon' Play "(2001) 의 가사를 표절했다고 주장하며 "Playas they gon' play, and haters they would hate/"라는 가사를 인용했는데, 1심에서는 문제의 가사가 저작권으로 보호되기에는 너무 "진부한" 것이라는 이유로 기각되었지만, 2019년 10월에 있었던 순회항소법원에서 1심의 판결을 파기하고 사건을 환송하였다. 이 재판은 아직도 진행중이다.
