"The Edge of Glory"는 Lady Gaga의 두번쨰 정규 앨범인 <Born This Way>의 수록곡으로 Lady Gaga & Fernando Garibay & DJ White Shadow가 공동 작곡하였고, Lady Gaga & Fernando Garibay가 프로듀싱 하였다.

2011년 5월 앨범의 프로모 싱글로 발매되었지만 평단의 호평과 대중의 반응이 매우 좋았던 덕에 앨범의 세 번째 싱글로 격상되었다. Lady Gaga측에서 애초에 생각했던것과는 달리, 평단과 대중 모두 이 곡에 열광했고, 그렇기에 이 곡이 앨범의 베스트 트랙으로 뽑힐 정도로 그 완성도가 높은 곡이다.

이 곡은 Lady Gaga의 할아버지가 돌아가실 때의 경험과 그 경험이 그에에게 미친 영향에서 영감을 받아서 작곡한 곡이라고 한다. 그녀는 2010년에 Monster Ball Tour를 위해 유럽으로 떠나기전에 자신의 할아버지와 함께 시간을 보냈는데, 자신의 조부를 두고 "확실히 승리하신 분이셨다. 돌아가실 때, 할머니와 나를 만나시고 난 바로 뒤에 홀로 돌아가셨는데, 돌아가시기 전에 할머니를 바라보시던 그 순간에는 그야말로 '영광의 끝'에서 서 계시던 시간"이라고 표현했다. 그녀의 인생에서 처음으로 친가족을 잃는 경험이었기에, 누구나 그렇듯이 정서적으로 매우 큰 임팩트가 있었던 듯 하다.

원래 이 곡의 뮤직비디오는 뮤직비디오계의 거장 Joseph Kahn이 맡게 되었다. 하지만 레이디 가가 측은 콘티를 확인한 상태였고, 수중 인어씬을 포함한 세트까지 전부 지어진 상태에서 모종의 이유로 전부 철수를 해버렸고, 조셉 칸과 그의 스태프들도 철수하게 된다. 이에 대해 Lady Gaga는 이후 감독과의 철학이 맞지 않아서 틀어졌다고 말했다. 자세한 내막은 두 당사자만이 알겠으나, Lady Gaga는 자신의 표현하고자 하는 바를 강하게 주장했고, 동시에 Joseph Kahn역시 자신의 콘티를 밀어붙이면서 결별하게 된 것으로 보인다. 하지만 이 곡은 당시 한창 상승세를 타고 있던 시점이라 뮤직비디오 공개를 늦출 수 없었고, Lady Gaga측은 긴박하게 자체적으로 세트를 짓고 의상을 빌려 제작한 뮤직비디오를 공개하게 된다.
