Disney사는 창립자인 Walt Disney가 사망한 뒤로 1970년대~1980년대내내 지속적으로 침체되어 잊혀져 가고있던 회사의 재도약을 꿈꾸며 화려했던 명성을 회복하고자 절치부심한다.


1986년부터 무려 3년이라는 긴 시간동안 400명 이상의 미술 예술가들과 기술자들을 동원하여 무려100만 장 이상의 원화를 완성하고 길이가 7,000 ft에 달하는 필름을 편집하여 첫번째 대작을 완성해내니, 바로 <The Little Mermaid>(인어공주) 였다. 이 장편 에니메이션은 각각의 모든 장면을 사람이 손으로 그리고 채색한 원화를 사용한 디즈니에서 제작한 마지막 정통 셀 원화 에니메이션으로 그 의의가 있다.

그렇게 절지부심하여 심혈을 기울여 제작한 이 작품이 전세계적으로 극장에서 대성공을 하면서 디즈니는 제2의 전성기라 할 수 있는 "디즈니 르네상스"를 화려하게 맞이하게 된다.


제작비 4,000만 달러를 들인 이 작품은 전세계적으로 공전의 히트를 기록하며 무려 2억 1,130만 달러를 벌어들이며 태풍과 같이 흥행했다.

이 작품을 대표하는 곡인 "Under The Sea"는 Alan Menken이 작곡하고, 작사는 Howard Ashman이 맡았으며, 작중에서 랍스터인 Sebastian을 연기한 Samuel E. Wright가 불렀다.

이 곡은 1990년 제62회 아카데미 시상식에서 주제가상 후보로 노미네이트 되어 시상식에서 공연을 펼쳤는데, 결국 주제가상을 수상하며 Alan Menken과 Howard Ashman에게 생애 첫 아카데미상을 안겨 주었다.


작중에서 세바스찬이 에리얼에게 인간이 되지 말고 바다에 남아달라고 애원하면서 이 노래를 부르는데, 인간 세상은 불행하지만 바다 밑은 살기 좋은 곳이라는 가사로, 곡의 가사에서 라임이 매우 잘 짜여져 있어 신나면서 중독성이 있다.
