본명이 Marshall Bruce Mathers III인 레퍼이자 영화배우 Eminem이 주연을 맏아 열연했던 본인의 자전적(물론 아주 일부의 부분) 영화라고 할 수 있는 8 Mile의 주제가이자 8 Mile 사운드트랙의 1번 트랙으로 2000년대를 상징하는 명곡중 하나이다.

 

 

2000년대 미국 힙합을 대표하는 명곡으로, 8 Mile 영화가 개봉한 후 Hip Hop 역사상 최초로 무려 12주 연속 빌보드 HOT 100 No.1을 기록하는 대기록을 만들어낸 Eminem 인생 최고의 흥행곡이라고 할 수 있다. 또한 동시에 2000년대를 통틀어 가장 성공한 메가히트곡들 중 하나이며, Hip Hop 역사상 가장 유명하고 성공한 곡 이다.

 

 

2003년 Academy Awards에서 Best Original Song을 수상하고, Critics' Choice Movie Awards에서 Best Song을 수상했으며, MTV Video Music Awards에서 Best Video from a Film 수상했다. 이듬해인 2004년 Grammy Awards에서 Best Male Rap Solo Performance 및 Best Rap Song 두 개 부분을 수상했다.

 

그리고 놀랍게도 단 한 번 만에 녹음된 곡으로 유명한데, 1절 2절 3절을 각각 한 번씩 숨을 고르고 녹음하는 식으로 녹음했다고 한다. 매 벌스와 훅 사이가 겹쳐 Overdubing이 필요할 수 밖에 없는 구조의 곡이면서 백코러스도 Eminem 본인의 목소리라서 1Take 으로 녹음하는것이 불가능한 구조임을 감안해서 기술적으로 단 한번에 녹음된 것으로 평가한다.

 

여담으로 이 곡을 녹음하기 직전, 그의 딸 헤일리가 Eminem에게 놀아달라고 했는데 에미넴이 "10분만 기다려"라고 말하고 녹음하러 들어가서는, 정말로10분 만에 나왔다는 일화가 있다.

 

 

곡 도입부의 기타리프가 단 한번만 들어도 평생 잊혀지지 않을 정도로 강렬한데, 마치 Red Zeppelin의 Kashmir를 생각하게 한다. (물론 지금의 대중들은 Red Zeppelin의 Kashmir를 들으면 Marvel의 아이언맨이 떠오르겠지만..)

 

 

이렇게 이 곡은 2000년대를 관통하는 전설적인 Hip Hop곡으로 전세계인들의 뇌리에 각인되었는데, 또 하나 전설적인 Mim도 탄생하게 된다.

 

 

바로 곡의 도입부에 나오는 Mon's Sphagetty 인데, 영미권 웹에서 가장 영향력 있는 커뮤니티 중 하나인 4 chan 에서 이것으로 Mim(밈)을 만들기 시작했는데, 워낙에 mom's spaghetti가 입에 착 붙는 데다가 그 부분의 임팩트가 너무 커서, 가사의 모든 부분을 Mom's spaghetti로 바꾼 패러디 곡까지 등장하게 된다.
