Rainy Days And Mondays - The Carpenters.1971(비화)

"Rainy Days and Mondays"는 Carpenters의 셀프 타이틀 앨범 <Carpenters>의 수록곡으로 Paul Williams 와 Roger Nichols가 함께 만들었고, Jack Daugherty가 프로듀싱 하였다.

 

 

빌보드 HOT100에서 2위까지 올랐고, 캐나다AC차트에서 1위, 뉴질랜드19위, 영국 63위, 일본 오리콘 차트 71위등을 기록했다. (미국에서는 아쉽게도 Carole King의 "It's Too Late"에 밀려 1위를 차지하지 못했다.)

 

 

이 곡의 가사를 보면 잘 풀리지 않는 상황에 대해 월요일 이라는 시간적 핑계, 비오는 날이라는 날씨 핑계를 대면서 불안정한 상황에 대한 방어기재로 삼는 모습을 보이고 있는데, 오늘날 우리들의 모습이 연상된다.

 

 

이 곡을 만든 Roger Nichols와 Paul Williams는 당시까지 무명의 팀이었는데, Paul Williams의 경우 단역 배우를 전전하고 있었고, 노모까지 모시며 살고 있었는데 영화배우로써 잘 풀리지 않았기에 노모는 생활을 위해 일을 나가야 했고 배우로써의 미래를 기대했던 영화 <The Chase>에서 단역으로써의 기회조차 날아가 버리면서 우연치않게 작사가로 방향을 잡았고, 70년를 대표하는 Three Dog Night 의 "An Old Fashioned Love Song", "Out in the Country", Helen Reddy 의 " You and Me", "Against the World", Tiny Tim 의 "Fill Your Heart", the Carpenters의 "We've Only Just Just Begun", "Rainy Days and Mondays" 등을 포함한 여러 히트곡을 만들게 된다.

또한 Bugsy Malone.1976의 악보와 가사를 쓰고 The Muppet Movie 주제곡인 "Rainbow Connection"로 오스카상 후보에 올랐으며,Barbra Streisand가 주연한 영화 <A Star Is Born>의 러브 테마인 "Evergreen" 으로 Grammy Award에서 Song of the Year을 수상하고 Oscar에서 Best Original Song을 수상 했을 정도로 Songwritter로 활약했다.
