"When a Man Loves a Woman"은 미국의 팝가수 Michael Bolton의 7번 째 앨범 <Time, Love & Tenderness>에 수록된 곡으로 Calvin Lewis & Andrew Wright이 만들었고, Walter Afanasieff & Michael Bolton이 프로듀싱 하였다.

 

이 곡은 Billboard Hot 100 차트와 Billboard Adult Contemporary 차트에서 모두 1위를 차지했고, 캐나다 차트에서도 1위를 차지했으며, 다수의 국가에서 TOP 10에 오르며 많은 사랑을 받았을 뿐 아니라, GRAMMY AWARD에서 최우수 남자 팝 보컬 퍼포먼스 부분을 수상하는등 상업적 성공과 더불어 수상의 영예까지 가진 곡이 되었다.

 

 

이 곡은 1966년 Percy Sledge가 처음으로 녹음하여 빌보드 핫 100 차트와 R&B 싱글 차트에서 모두 1위를 차지했던 명곡으로, 1980년에 Bette Midler(배트 미들러)가 커버 하여 TOP 40까지 오르기도 했었다.

 

Michael Bolton의 버전은 Billboard의 집계 시스템이 "Nielsen SoundScan"으로 전환되기 전의  Sales Record와 Radio play 두가지의 Report로 채점을 하던 과거의 Billboard Hot 100 차트 시스템에서 차트에 마지막으로 1위를 한 노래로 기록되기도 했다.

 

이 곡은 한국에서도 90년대에 오랫동안 많은 사랑을 받은 곡이었는데, 영미권에서는 정말 오랫동안 결혼식에서 축가로 불리운 곡이었다.
