"Girls Just Want to Have Fun"은 1979년에 미국의 뮤지션 Robert Hazard가 작곡하고 자신이 싱글로 발표했던 오리지널 곡으로, 1983년에 Cyndi Lauper가 커버한 버전으로 널리 알려졌다.

 

Cyndi Lauper가 솔로 아티스트로써 발매한 데뷔 앨범인 <She's So Unusual>에 수록되어, 그녀의 첫 번째 메이저 싱글이자 앨범의 리드 싱글로 발표된 이곡은 선풍적인 인기를 끌며 Billboard Hot 100 차트에서 2위에 올랐고, 1983년 후반과 1984년 초반에 걸쳐 전세계적인 히트를 기록했다. 공전의 히트를 기록했던 Cyndi Lauper의 버전은 GRAMMY AWARDS에서 Record of the Year 와 Best Female Pop Vocal Performance에 노미네이트 되었으나 아쉽게 수상에는 실패한다.

 

또한 Edd Griles가 감독한 뮤직 비디오는 American Video Awards 와 MTV Video Music Award에서 Best Female Video를 수상한다. 이 뮤직 비디오는 35,000달러라는 초저예산으로 제작되었는데, 당시에 사용가능 했던 최고가의 장비를 무료로 대여하면서 경비를 절감할 수 있었고, 그녀가 소속된 레이블인Portrait/CBS에서 비서들을 무상으로 동원하는등 여러가지 협조를 통해 이뤄낼 수 있었다.

 

이 곡은 아직까지도 Cyndi Lauper의 대표곡으로 남아 있으며, "Rolling Stone 와 MTV에서 꼽은 '100 Greatest Pop Songs'에서 22위를 차지했으며, Rolling Stone에서 선정한 "The 100 Top Music Videos "에서는 39위에 선정되었다.
