1985년 발매된 《Whitney Houston》의 다섯 번째 싱글로 HOT100 에서 No.1을 차지했던 곡이다.
George Merrill과 Shanon Rubicam이 작곡,작사하고 Narada Michael Walden가 프로듀싱한 이 곡은 원래 Janet Jackson을 위해 만들어진 곡이었으나 Whitney에게 오게되고, 그녀의 히트곡이 된다.
George Merrill과 Shanon Rubicam은 1984년 A&M Records의 임원인 John McClain이 고용한 R&B 가수 Janet Jackson을 위해 이 노래의 데모를 작성했다고 한다. 그러나 노래를 들어본 Jackson의 매니지먼트는 그녀의 다른 커리어에 비해 이 곡이 너무 빈약하다고 생각했는지 이 곡을 패스했고....
Merrill은 Fred Bronson 과의 인터뷰에서
"우리는 꽤나 화가 났었어요, 당시의 그녀에게 정말 완벽하다고 생객했기 때문이죠. 우리는 완전히 그녀를 염두에 두고 이 곡을 썼었거든요."("We were pretty upset because we thought it was perfect for her at the time. We had written it with her completely in mind.")
라며 이 곡에 대한 Jackson의 결정을 알게 된 후의 자신의 서운했던 감정을 표현 했는데, 정말 많이 서운했었던가 보다.
Arista Records 의 R&B 음악 감독 Gerry Griffith는 당시 무명이라 할 수 있었던 Whitney을 위해 오랜 핑퐁게임 끝에 Merrill과 Rubicam으로부터 이 곡의 사용 허가를 얻어냈고,
당시 Aretha Franklin의 작업을 하느라 손사레를 치는 Narada Michael Walden에게 이 신인은 믿을 수 없는 대스타가 될 거라며 작업을 강권했고, 그는 작곡가의 승인하에 달달한 R&B 베이스 였던 이곡을 완전히 뜯어 고쳐서 신나는 댄스 Pop으로 바꿔놓는다.
결과는 대히트를 치면서 휘트니 휴스턴이라는 대스타의 출발이 되었으니, 역시 뭐든지 주인은 따로 있다는 말이 이럴때 쓰이는 것이 아닐지..
이 곡을 계기로 George Merrill과 Shanon Rubicam은 계속 Whitney와 작업을 함께 하며 그녀를 최고의 스타로 만들어 주게 된다.
