The Time of My Life - Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes.1987(이야기들)

"(I've Had) The Time of My Life"는 미국의 블루 아이드 소울의 개척자이자 상징적 존재라 할 수 있는 "The Righteous Brothers"의 Bill Medley 와 컨트리 가수 Jennifer Warnes가 영화 <더티 댄싱>(Dirty Dancing)의 주제곡으로 녹음한 곡으로, John DeNicola & Donald Markowitz & Franke Previte이 함께 만들고, Michael Lloyd가 프로듀싱 하였다.

(Franke Previte은 이 곡과 함께 자신의 앨범에 넣을 예정이었던 Hungry Eyes까지 이 영화의 OST로 넣게 되고, 둘 다 크게 성공하면서 제2의 전성기를 맞게 되기도 했다.)

 

 

영화의 주제곡으로 제작된 이 곡은 영화의 전세계적인 대성공과 더불어 빌보드 HOT에서 1위를 차지했고(빌보드 AC차트에서는 4주간 1위), 캐나다, 호주, 벨기에, 네덜란드, 남아공등에서 차트 1위를 차지했으며, 영국, 스페인, 독일, 오스트리아, 아일랜드, 뉴질랜드등에서 TOP5에 들며 전세계적으로 크게 사랑받았다.

 

 

상업적인 대성공과 더불어 다수의 시상식에서 수상의 영예도 함께 가져가며 80년대 후반을 대표하는 노래로 남게 되었다.

하지만 이런 대단한 성공과는 달리 영화와 음악 모두 제작당시에는 크게 애를 먹으며 힘들게 제작된 것들이었다.

이 영화자체도 엄청난 우여곡절 끝에 5백만 달러라는 저예산으로 제작이 확정 되었는데...문제는 음악이었는데, 음악에 쓸 수 있는 예산은 정말 쥐꼬리 만큼이었고, 그마져도 1960년대의 유명곡을 라이선스하여 쓰는데 거진 소비해 버린 후, 남은 얼마되지 않은 돈으로 주제곡을 만들어야 하는 문제에 봉착한 것이었다.

 

 

섭외하는 작곡가마다 베스트론이라는 제작사 & 더티댄싱이라는 영화 제목 & X등급(현 NC-17)을 보고는 준 포르노가 아닌가 하여 거부하기 일쑤였고, Franke Previte역시 거절했지만, OST의 제작의 총책임을 진 Jimmy Ienne(지미 아이너)의 끈질긴 설득 끝에 마음을 돌렸다고 한다. 가수의 섭외 역시 험난했는데, 우여곡절 끝에 마지막 순간에 Bill Medley 와 Jennifer Warnes의 섭외에 성공했고, 영화배우들은 곡이 녹음도 되지 않았기에, 가이드 녹음된 데모 버전을 들으면서 촬영을 해야했다.

 

 

그렇게 많은 편견과 거절들 속에서 힘겹게 진행되어 발매된 OST는 월드와이드 세일즈로 무려 700만장이 넘는 판매고를 올리며 대성공을 거두었고, Franke Previte는 제2의 전성기를 맞이했고, 은퇴를 했어야 할 Bill Medley와 컨트리 가수 Jennifer Warnes에게는 Pop 음악으로써 가수 인생의 대표곡이 되었다
