"We Build This City"는 미국의 록 밴드 Starship의 데뷔 앨범 <Knee Deep in the Hoopla>의 수록곡으로 Bernie Taupin & Martin Page & Dennis Lambert & Peter Wolf가 함께 만들었고, Peter Wolf와 Jeremy Smith가 함께 프로듀싱 하였다.
앨범의 데뷔 싱글로 발매된 이곡은 빌보드 HOT100에서 1위를 차지했고, 캐나다, 호주, 남아프리카 공화국에서 차트 1위를 기록한 것을 비롯하여 EURO HOT100차트, 아일랜드, 스웨덴, 스위스, 독일등 다수의 국가에서 TOP10에 들며 크게 성공하였다.
상업적인 성공과 더불어 수상의 영예도 챙길 수 있었는데, 28회 Grammy Award에서 Rock Vocal Performance 부문을 수상하는 영예를 가져가기도 했다.
이 곡의 공동작곡가인 Martin Page와 Bernie Taupin은 이 곡이 LA의 라이브 공연 클럽의 쇠퇴에 관한 것이라고 밝혔는데, 가사는 록 음악 클럽을 폐쇄하는 기업 이익에 대한 호소로 구성되어 있다.
"음반회사들은 공룡처럼 거대해져서 어떻게든 자신들의 profits(이익)만 극대화 하려하고 경영진은 귀족이라도 된 듯 respectability(체면)만 따지고("Too Many runaways"), 록 음악이 처음에 사람들을 이 도시로 데려왔다는 것을 잊었죠."("Don't you remember? We built this city on rock and roll!").
*라이브 공연 클럽은 2012년 전세계적으로 히트한 탐 크루즈 주연의 영화 Rock of Ages에서 the BOURBON Room으로 상징성을 가진 곳으로 묘사되기도 했다.
사실 이 곡은 원래 로스앤젤레스를 지칭하며 만들어졌었지만, 곡의 중간에 라디오 DJ가 아래와 같이 말하는 구어 막간과 함께 San Francisco(샌프란시스코)로 변경 되었는데
"I'm looking out over that Golden Gate Bridge."(나는 저 금문교 너머를 내다보고 있어요)
다시금 아래와 같이 언급하면서 메세지의 보편성을 강조하며 모호성을 강조했다.
"It's your favorite radio station in your favorite radio city, the city by the bay, the city that rocks, the city that never sleeps", stressing the universality of the message
(여기 당신이 가장 좋아하는 라디오 도시 & 만 옆의 도시 & 흔들리는 도시 & 잠들지 않는 도시에 당신이 가장 좋아하는 라디오 방송국이 있죠.)
이런 모호성은 곡의 성공에 대한 확장성을 노린것이었는데, 실제로 이런 모호성을 이용하여 미국의 다양한 지역의 라디오 방송국은 이 곡을 틀때마다 자신들의 지역에 대한 설명을 추가하거나 혹은 그 자리에 자신들의 지역의 정체성을 추가하기도 했다.

하지만 예상치 못하게, 엄청난 인기와 함께 쇄퇴해가는 록 정신을 부르짓던 이 곡에 대해 Rolling Stone과 GQ, Blender 등은 못마땅한 기색을 대놓고 드러내며 이 곡을 "최악의 노래" 목록에 올리기도 했는데, 다름아닌 이런 식의 노래가 바로 Rock Music을 죽인 장본인이라며 비난했다.
(그쪽에서 보기에는 사회를 비판하고 록 음악의 쇄퇴를 우려하는 내용의 곡이라고는 하지만, 너무 가벼운 분위기에서 록 음악의 쇄퇴를 과도하게 희화화 함으로써 체제에 대항하고, 사회의 진보를 꿈꾸는 진중해야할 록 음악을 장난처럼 보여지게 했다는 이유가 아닐까 싶다.)
