Katy Perry의 2집 <Teenage Dream>의 수록곡으로 Katy Perry & Mikkel S. Eriksen & Tor Erik Hermansen & Sandy Wilhelm & Ester Dean 이 공동으로 작사작곡 하였으며, Stargate 와 Sandy Vee 가 프로듀싱 하였다.

 

앨범의 3번 째 싱글로 발매된 이 곡은 그녀가 4번째 빌보드 HOT100 1위를 차지할 수 있게해주면서 4주간이나 정상을 차지했고, 캐나다와 뉴질랜드에서도 차트를 석권했으며 다수의 국가에서 Top 5를 기록하며 큰 사랑을 받았는데, 특히나 미국에서 대단한 사랑을 받았다.

 

 

이 곡은 2018년 RIAA 11X Platinum(1,100만 유닛판매) 인증이라는 대기록을 세웠고, 2020년 8월에 12X Platinum(1,200만 유닛판매)을 인증 받으면서 여성 아티스트로써 역사상 가장 높은 판매량을 인증 받은 곡으로 역사에 기록되었는데, 월드와이드 세일즈로 무려 1,640만장(순판매와 스트리밍 합산)이라는 전무후무한 기록을 세웠다. 공교롭게도 케이티 페리의 빌보드 HOT 100 1위곡 가운데 Max Martin 과 Dr.Luke가 참여하지 않은 유일한 곡이기도 하다.

이 곡의 가사중에 "Like the 4th of July"라는 문구 덕분에 매년 미국의 독립기념일이 되면 아이튠즈 차트에서 상위권으로 올라오며 싱글 판매도 매년 늘고 있는데, 슬프게도 광복절의 의미가 퇴색되어가고 있는 대한민국과는 다르게, 7월04일 독립기념일이 크리스마스와 더불어 가장 크게 축하하고 즐기는 명절인 미국에서는 가히 연금이라고 할 수 있을 정도로 매년 6~7월에 많이 플레이 된다.

 

 

Kate Perry 는 그녀의 자전 다큐멘터리 영화 <Part Of Me>에서 자신이 쓴 곡 중 가장 좋아하는 곡은 Firework라고 밝혔는데, 팬들의 신청을 미리 받아 플래시몹으로 계획된 뮤직 비디오 역시 매우 유명하다.

 

강도들의 습격에 마술로 대응하는 소년, 중환자실에서 투병중인 어린아이, 수영장에 뛰어드는 비만 소녀, 분만실에서 산통을 겪고 있는 산모, 어머니를 학대하는 아버지에게 맞서는 소년, 붐비는 클럽에서 키스를 나누는 게이 커플 등 고통스러운 상황이나 힘든 도전에 직면한 사람들의 가슴에서 불꽃(firework)이 타오르는 모습을 보여주며 용기를 북돋는 내용이다.
