1995년 개봉한 33번째 장편 디즈니 애니메이션 <포카혼타스>(Pocahontas)의 주제곡으로 Alan Menken이 작곡하고, Steven Schwarts가 작사를 맡았으며, 극 중에서는 포카혼타스 역의 Judy Kuhn이 노래를 불렀으며, Pop 버전은 Vanessa Williams가 불렀다.

Vanessa Williams의 팝 버전은 빌보드 HOT 100에서 4위를 기록했는데, 그 어마어마했던 전작 라이언 킹(Lion King)의 주제곡이었던 Elton John의 Can You Feel The Love Tonight가 돌풍을 일으켰었기에 당연히 HOT 100에서 1위를 차지했을 것이라 생각하는 사람들이 많은데, 그 곡 역시 동일하게 4위를 기록했었다.

1995년 제 68회 아카데미 시상식과 제 53회 골든 글로브 시상식에서 모두 주제가 상을 수상하는 영광을 누렸으며, 그래미 어워드에서 'Best song Written for a Movie' 부문을 수상했다. 아카데미 시상식에서는 Vanessa Williams 가 직접 무대에 올라 축하 공연을 펼치기도 했다.

앨런 멩컨이 작곡, 스티븐 슈왈츠가 작사를 맡아 협업하였으며 평이 무척 좋았다. 주제가인 'Colors of the Wind'는 아카데미 시상식에서 주제가 상을 받았으며, 오리지널 스코어 부문까지 수상하며 2관왕을 달성하였다. 앨런 멩컨과 스티븐 슈왈츠는 후속작인 노틀담의 꼽추에서도 함께 사운드트랙에 참여했다.

초절정기를 가졌던 전작 라이온 킹에 이어 디즈니 르네상스 시기에 포함되는 작품으로, 이번에는 실존인물인 아메리카 원주민 포카혼타스(Pocahontas)의 이야기를 각색하는것에 도전하였는데, 여러가지 역사 왜곡과 영국인들의 미국 대륙 침략에 대한 미화라는 비평과 비난을 받으며 말이 많았던 작품이다.

흥행 성적은 북미 1억 4천만 달러와 해외 2억 달러를 합쳐서 월드와이드 3억 4천만 달러를 돌파하여 1995년 북미 박스오피스 4위 및 1995년 월드와이드 박스오피스 5위에 오르며 흥행에 성공하였다. 이상하게도 이 작품에 대해 디즈니는 제작비를 공개하지 않았는데, 비슷한 시기의 애니메이션 제작비를 참고하여 5천만불 정도로 추측된다. 즉 1억 5천 ~ 2억 달러의 순수익을 남기며 준수한 성공을 거두었을 것으로 보이지만, 이 작품은 피부로 느껴질 정도로 본편 애니메이션의 열풍이 없었던 작품으로 기억된다.

cf : 이 작품은 북한과도 연관이 깊은데 이 작품을 제작할 당시 디즈니에서 북한 애니메이션 회사를 원화 하청으로 선정해 하청을 맡겼다고 한다. 그런 이유로 역대 디즈니 작품들과 비교해보면 상당히 몽환적이고 동양적인 편에 속한다.
