"When I Fall in Love"는 Victor Young이 작곡하고 Edward Heyman이 작사한 곡으로, 1952년 Jeri Southern1952년 4월에 처음으로 녹음한 이후로 많은 아티스트가 커버하는 아메리칸 클래식이 되었다.

1952년 7월에 발표된 Doris Day가 커버한 버전이 이곡의 첫번째 히트 버전이라고 할 수 있는데, 빌보드 HOT 100에서 20위까지 오르며 많은 사랑을 받았다.

 

 

그리고 Nat King Cole이 1956년 12월 이 곡을 커버하면서 비로소 이 곡은 불멸의 명곡의 반열에 오를 토대를 마련하게 된다. 그가 커버한 버전은 <Love Is the Thing> 앨범에 수록되었고, 또한 1957년의 영화 <이스탄불> OST로 삽입되었는데, 1957년 영국에서 싱글로 발매되어 UK 싱글 차트에서 2위에 올랐으며, 1987년에 재발매되어 4위를 차지하기도 했다.

 

 

Natalie Cole은 두번이나 이 곡을 커버했는데, 첫번째는 1987년 그녀의 앨범 <Everlasting>에서 현대적인 R&B 와 Swing풍의 Smooth Jazz 느낌의 버전이었는데 크게 히트하지는 못했다.

 

 

두번째는 1996년 발표한 앨범 <Stardust>에 수록된 버전으로 좀 더 원작에 가까운 해석으로 커버한 버전인데, 이 버전은 그녀의 아버지 Nat King Cole이 1956년 커버한 버전을 가상의 듀엣으로 사용하여 녹음한 것이었다. 이 1996년 버전은 그 해 제39회 GRAMMY AWARDS에서 "Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals" 을 수상 했으며 편곡자인 Alan Broadbent 와 David Foster는 "Best Instrumental Arrangement with Accompanying Vocal"을 수상했다.

 

 

* 이 곡은 또한 1993년 달콤한 영화 <Sleepless In Seatle>의 OST로 삽입된 celine dion & clive griffin 의 듀엣 버전이 우리나라에서는 많이 알려져 있다.
