덴마크의 혼성 그룹 AQUA의 앨범 <Aquarium>에 수록되어 전세계적으로 성공을 거둔 곡.

1997년 발표한 <Aquarium> 앨범은 그들을 유럽을 넘어 전세계적인 스타로 만들며 흥행에 성공하고, 무려 800만장 이상의 앨범 판매를 기록했으며, 모든 수록곡이 골고루 사랑을 받았다. 특히 Barbir Girl은 역대 가장 많이 팔린 싱글중 하나로 아직까지도 기록되어 있다.

특히나 영국을 비롯한 유럽 각국 차트에서 1위를 차지했고, 빌보드 HOT 100에서 7위까지 올랐던 이 곡은 곡 전체의 짜임세에 보컬인 Lene Nystrøm(레네 뉘스트룀)의 특이한 음색까지 더해져 유로팝의 정수라고 할 만큼 뛰어난 만듬새를 자랑한다.

그룹 AQUA는 1990년대부터 현재까지 활동 중인 덴마크의 유로댄스 혼성 그룹인데, 보컬인 레네 뉘스트룀만 노르웨이 국적이고 나머지 남성 멤버들은 전부 덴마크 국적으로 2001년 해체 했다가 2008년 재결성 하기도 했다.

원래는 아쿠아의 남성 멤버들 셋이서 1989년에 Joy Speed라는 그룹을 결성하여 활동을 했었는데, 발매 하는 음반마다 정말 단 1장도 안 팔리다시피 했다고 한다. 이정도면 음악을 포기할 만도 한데, 계속 음악 활동을 이어가다가 그들을 메인스트림으로 올려줄 보석과도 같은 Lene Nystrøm(레네 뉘스트룀)을 발견하고 그룹 이름도 AQUA로 변경 후, 1994년부터 본격적으로 활동하기 시작 했다.

뮤직 비디오의 발랄함과는 다르게 가사가 상당히 성인 지향적이라서 흠칫하기도 한데, 그런 이유로 동시에 다수의 음악잡지에서 최악의 노래로 선정되기도 했다.

Barbie를 머리가 빈 여자(Bimbo Girl)이고 너무 싸 보이는 파티 걸로 묘사되고, "나는 네 판타지 속에서 어디서나 벗기거나 만지거나 키스하거나 심지어 무릎 꿇릴 수도 있는 존재"라고 묘사한 가사 때문이다.

이런 가사 내용 때문에 Barbie 인형의 제조사인 MATTEL社는 격분하여 즉시 노래를 발매한 MCA 레코드 사에 소송을 걸었으나, 해당 레코드 회사는 시간이 지난 2002년이 되어서야 수정헌법 1조 때문에 무죄 판결을 받기도 했다.
