The Beach Boys의 11번째 스튜디오 앨범 <Pet Sound>에 수록되어 캐나다 챠트 4위, 미국 챠트 8위 등을 기록했고, 피치포크 미디어 선정 최고의 1960년대 음악200 에서 7위에 올랐던 히트곡이다.

Brian Wilson이 작곡,편곡,프로듀싱을 맡아서 제작했고, Tony Asher, Mike Love가 공동으로 작사를 했다. 하지만 사실상 대부분의 가사는 Tony가 홀로 썻으며, Mike는 자신이 부른 마지막 부분의 멜로디와 가사를 덧붙인 것인데, Mike의 기여도에 대한 멤버들간의 이견이 많았기에 결국은 법정으로 가게될 정도로 큰 분쟁이 있었고, 최종적으로 1994년 판결에서 승인을 받으며 마무리 된다.

Brian Wilson은 다양한 OVERDUBBING과 매우 복잡한 편곡, 그리고 뛰어난 Vocal 퍼포먼스를 통해 Wall Of Sound 라 불리는 스타일로 곡을 완성했고, 대중 음악에서는 거의 쓰이지 않는 리타르단도(ritardando) : [점점 느려지는]를 한 섹션에 사용하기도 했는데, 이 곡은 많은 사랑을 받으며 밴드 최고의 곡으로 남게 된다.

이 곡은 경쾌한 멜로디(joyous-sounding)에 우울한 가사(melancholic lyrics)가 어우러져서 파워팝(Power-POP)의 기틀을 잡은 곡으로 평가받는데, 음악적인 혁신이라는 측면에서는 프로그레시브 팝(progressive pop)으로 평가 받기도 한다.
